  1. The Stones. I was a big fan of their early albums that borrowed from a lot of the blues and loved their later 60s stuff like Aftermath (a classic) and Between the Buttons, which to me is one of the better albums made by anyone, any genre PERIOD! Not a big fan of their output after the 60s however.
  2. WKCR (89.9 FM) in New York is having a Coltrane marathon (already started) that runs for 2 weeks for 24 hours a day. That's non stop Coltrane for 24 hours a day for 14 day. The web address is WKCR.
  3. He's still under the Bird influence but finding his own voice. Don't get me wrong. I think these are very, very good and love them, as well as his sound. Don't forget LD + The Three Sounds. Excellent. I also love his Here Tis, organ stuff as well. They're different, that's all.
  4. I like these but they don't overpower me. I like the ones Brownie referred to a lot better. I also find his work at BN better as a sideman than a lead.
  5. There aren't that many Clay led date so I'd get excited and run for the bathroom. The Coleman is solid but not spectacular.
  6. It's on the Brownie box and that is generally available (unless you don't want to spend that kind of cash).
  7. I received an email from the seller and he asked me tell everybody here that because it was his father's wish that his collection be placed with jazz fans, he and his mother are offering a 5% discount. His name is Hal Farber and his email is jazzmantom2004@yahoo.com so you can contact him directly. BTW, he takes paypal.
  8. According to his ebay feedback profile, he is in the US.
  9. I don't how many of you have looked at this but if you're into bop, there are a couple of cds there that are fabulous: Volume 2 and 3 of Jazz West Coast Live on Savoy.
  10. I printed out his list and there is some incredible stuff on there. Everyone should take a look at it, unless you don't want to empty out your pocketbook
  11. I just received a magazine called Special Jazz, courtesy of my recent order from SteepleChase and in it there's an ad from Storyville for, among other things, Dexter Gordon "At Highschool". Has anybody heard this? Any views?
  12. Looks like you've been "ratted out" by the moose.
  13. Funny but something else caught my eye, can't remember what it was now....... I guess you don't need glasses after all
  14. I think people who are heavily into audio (I wouldn't consider myself one of them) prefer the TOCJs generally. They seem to have a warmer sound. Myself, although I do have a good system, like them both and would second grey's thought that you have to look at them on a case by case basis. AT's Delight for example is not a good JRVG and when I had the chance to get the TOCJ I grabbed it. I kind of like the mini lp format although it is hard on the eyes. Although I voted for JRVGs, I could have really gone for TOCJ on this. I know it's been mentioned before and it's not part of this discussion but the VICJs beat JRVGs hand down in my opinion in all areas: sound and the mini lp case themselves.
  15. He was at Shanghai Jazz in Madison, NJ this weekend and I saw him this weekend with what I assume is a quartet made up for the event. This is the first time I've seen him and I've wanted to see him since I heard him on a Junior Cook Cd, You Leave Me Breathless (on SteepleChase, which I really recommend BTW). He didn't disappoint. He's much in the style of Clifford Brown. But who really impressed me was his pianist, Mike Ledonne. This guy is good. I was very impressed by him. His solos, his fills, his accompaniment were just things of beauty. He had one song that was done as a trio while Valery sat it out, Neal Hefti's L'il Darling. It was just beautiful. I'm sorry he didn't do more by himself. I'd love to hear with his own group.
  16. A sociopath is one who is generally regarded as having a psycopathic personality, anti social or sexually deviant. To call Bird a sociopath is assinine. Yes, he had problems. Who doesn't? And even if he could be labeled a socipath, what of it? What's the revelance. If my memory is not off, wasn't Collier given quite a wide berth on the Burns series which instead of glorifying Bird's music spent too much time on the drug culture of those years. Enough said. The problem with types like him is that to those with a limited interest in jazz, that's the image they're left with of jazz. I've had people say that to me. They remember the image not the music and that's the shame. WNMC, I think it's time to give it up. You keep beating against the wind when Larry and Mike have shown what Grove is all about.
  17. Jim, Good luck tomorrow or when Mr. Stork comes down. Hope everything goes well for you and your wife.
  18. This IS the place to be. Thank you all, but especially Jim, for making this a great place. That Maxine Gordon, Dexter's wife, chose to post here, is just god-darned amazing. If you want talk about a jazz BB, there's only one place to go. Let's keep it going

    Basie On Verve

    Ahhh, duly noted and corrected.
  20. Now, that's a sale. Well, there goes a few bucks. I'll have to see if they take paypal since I have some surplus there. That Sadik Hakim does look interesting.
  21. I wasn't really exposed to jazz when I was a kid but my parents loved to listen to show tunes and all the kind of music that serves as the basis for a lot of jazz. I used to love to listen to Gershwin, for example. I gravitated to the blues and eventually to jazz. The guy who really made love jazz was Art Blakey with Moanin'. It was like something went off in my head. The guy who cemented it was Bird, however. Incomparable. Bop is what makes me love jazz. I'm sort of like Philly Q and so is my son. The only thing he loves is video games. But when I was a kid you couldn't have foretold that I'd love jazz, so who knows? Maybe there's hope. He certainly knows and listens to jazz more than most kids or people. Osmosis

    Happy Birthday Dex!

Dear Maxine, I am so thrilled that you posted here. Dex occupies a special place in all our hearts and as long as we live we will never forget him. Today, I was relistening to Dexter Rides Again. It's such an incredible album. I had heard about the festival at the Irridium and unfortunately due to family commitments I couldn't make it. I would have loved to be there. We hope you post here and give us any impressions that you would love to share with us.
  23. Tom, One of the best and most moving books I've read is Francis Paudras' portrayal of Bud Powell, Dance of the Infidels. IMHO, it's must read.

    Basie On Verve

If it's straight Verve, looks like only about 9 albums. In other words, doable. Are Reprise and the other labels now part of Verve/Universal. If so, that's probably not doable, unless it's just the Complete Verve Sessions. However, in looking at Mike's list it doesn't include King of Swing, which came out as an LPR a year or so ago, or April in Paris. Perhaps there are more Verves?
  25. Well, from the foregoing it looks like all rules are out the window. Pity. Maybe we should amend that portion of the FAQ to indicate that anything goes.
