  1. Mosaic sets tend to be a little like Dickens's ghost of Christmas future. They come in their own good time. gregmo
  2. Pretty sure he was the last cast member of "Magnificent Seven" still with us. RIP. gregmo
  3. Oh, would that were true! I didn't get "Well, Git It!" on a reissue until many years later, but I had it on a 78!! This one just had the usual suspects. I played trombone, and I wanted to hear Dorsey. Thought I could play along with "Gettin' Sentimental" until I realized the genius SOB was starting it on C sharp!!! gregmo
  4. Interesting piece. Still want that Jug box! gregmo
  5. That WAS quick! So, how many more volumes do you all think we can we hope for? gregmo
  6. Both available...if you want them! : https://www.amazon.com/World-Finians-Rainbow-Great-Movie/dp/B00008A8I9/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1477845228&sr=8-1&keywords=Stan+kenton+Finian's+Rainbow gregmo
  7. I kept all my old Jazz Heritage LPs, and to these ears, the reprocessed stereo sounds pretty awful. I remember after the big Decca fire that some of us were horrified that those might be the only versions left of some fairly important music. I think the French series used those old "remasterings" where they were available and added much better mono ones where they weren't. That would explain why some were listed as "Mono/Stereo." Some of the latter series were very cool. As for the old one, well, I liked some of the covers! gregmo
  8. That said (!), are "Hair" and "Kenton/Wagner" the only Kenton Capitols that have never been reissued on cd? gregmo
  9. So, ok, I've preordered this one. Any hints as to what Mosaic's next big set will be? "Enquiring" minds want to know! gregmo
  10. No. Everyone knows the Bolden cylinders are right next to the Necronomicon in the Vatican Archives. Jeez........
  11. I was into the white dance bands when I was young. Yes, I was weird. This was the first:
  12. Just under $270 used on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/DEXTER-RADIOLAND-GORDON/dp/B00005I790 gregmo
  13. Thanks! gregmo
  14. As much as I love Bechet, that's just a bit rich for my blood! gregmo
  15. Thanks for posting these, especially the one on Bechet. I'm reading Chilton's biography right now, so that one fit right in! gregmo
  16. Third time was...*finally*...the charm. I liked this one. gregmo
  17. Thanks, Steve. That makes sense...well, as much sense as one *can* make of the small labels! gregmo
  18. I have a purely clueless question. In '45, Mezz Mezzrow "started" King Jazz Records. I was just reading Chris Albertson's excellent liners on the "King Jazz Records Story" box set on Storyville, and there's no mention of King Records, so I assume they were completely separate labels (I don't think Mezzrow ever visited Cincinnati in his life). It seems odd that Mezzrow could have gotten away with starting a label with the same--or nearly the same?--name as one already established, assuming the article is right, and King Records had been in business since '43? Or have I missed something? It sure as hell wouldn't be the first time! gregmo
  19. I have the box set. it's very far from jazz, I think, but there's some amazing guitar there! So yes, if we confine it to jazz guitarists, give Jim Hall a vote. gregmo
  20. Great, great guitarist, but "influential" is a tough word. I mean, Les Paul would probably be ranked pretty high on the "influential" scale! gregmo
  21. Me too. I'm a hopeless completist when it comes to Frank. gregmo
  22. This is still my favorite thread of all time! gregmo
  23. Putting all of Jug's Prestige recordings into a box would be a formidable undertaking--and a monster box--but I'd buy it! gregmo
  24. I like the sound on the Sunbeam "Bix Restored" series of this music. Thought Davies did a fine job with it. gregmo
