I just visited the store for the first time last weekend. They have an interesting way of arranging their cds (strict alphabetical order by artist, but no artist tabs--just letters of the alphabet). I'm not sure it's particularly customer-friendly, but the people working there certainly were. Found a couple of interesting cheapies in the bargain basement for 50 cents a pop and took home a couple from upstairs as well. I'd go back were I in the Chicago area again. gregmo

I always liked that edition of the band too. First discovered it a few centuries ago on an old Pickwick album I found at some Drug Store rack somewhere. Especially liked Charlie Shavers's work with that band. gregmo

I've finally been able to order the set (been traveling, been busy) and look forward to it, especially the Nistico. How can anyone who's listened to jazz for any real length of time not know Nistico? The "Northwest Passage" solo on "Woody's Winners" should be enough to bring him to the attention of anyone who ever listened to any of Woody's post 2nd herd bands, but, well, whatever. gregmo

Good to hear about the football pool! Thanks to all who wrote about little Owen (six years old). He rather miraculously survived a serious brain injury, and though he faces a long rehabilitation, it's a lot better to have a future than none at all. We in the family are all grateful and hopeful. And I will get back to where Mark lives at some point and see if I can't find out how he's doing! gregmo

I have had to postpone my trip back to where Mark lives. My youngest grandson suffered a severe brain injury while playing, and I've spent the last two days (and will spend the next several) in the hospital where he is (amazingly enough) recovering. I still hope to make the trip, but it won't be for a while. My apologies to those who were anxiously awaiting a report. I will get there eventually. gregmo

Right. The older set was all Sony-owned. This one is Universal. Mosaic never mixes those two. Scott wrote me once that neither label will license if the other is involved. gregmo

Erroll Garner was still doing some good trio work in the 60s, much of it reissued on Telarc. And O.P. did his "Exclusively for My Friends" records in that decade, which I think represent some of his best work. gregmo

Wow--genuinely surprised by this. I've always liked his playing. His work with Mel Torme has always been a particular favorite, and I loved the American Song Book albums. RIP. gregmo

As I've read this often thoughtful and interesting thread, I've gone back to something that struck me years ago, and that is that, purely creatively speaking, "Take Five" was a disaster for Brubeck and Desmond. Not financially of course. It put the dollar sign on the music and set them both up more or less for life, but creatively, I think it sent both of them into a dead end, and I wonder if they ever really managed to pull out of it. In that sense, *not* having a "Take Five" probably helped Lee Konitz creatively. Or am I making too much of it? gregmo

I'm really sitting on the fence about getting this one. How much of it would you characterize as "free," a la Sanders? I have some of the "out" stuff in my collection (Trane's Impulse Quartet stuff, Ornette's Atlantics, the Sam Rivers Mosaic), but I confess I don't listen to it much. gregmo

I was hoping to see a Brubeck live Columbia box as a follow-up to the Studio box, but I think I'm going to have to live with disappointment on that one. gregmo

His autobiography is out in paperback, and I recently got it. He had some tough years in the 30s and early 40s! So far (I'm only about 75 pages in), it's a good read. gregmo

Wow, a LOT of duplication for me too. I guess I'll probably get it. Like Jim, I guess I clear some off to replace with these. I'll be interested in the sound on the Basie Deccas. I have the Heps, and the sound on those is really good. gregmo

He was apparently quite the gambler at one time. I always liked seeing him in a movie. I think the last one I saw with him was "Thirteenth Warrior," but there may have been something more recent. RIP. gregmo

I noticed that too. Jazz in general plays an important role in the film, which is, I agree, a bit of a downer, albeit a lovely one. gregmo
