If his name ever came up when talking with friends, it was always Billy Fucking Joel, never ever just Billy Joel. When doing solo shows in '84 Elvis Costello used to make jokes in-between songs about "this next one is a Billy Joel number" just to scare the audience. Can't remember the song but one of his did start very similar to "Just The Way You Are." Never thought I'd see Love mentioned in a Billy Joel thread, but yes JazzKat, listen to Clementine!

Ok, that makes sense, and yes, despite the tricks with playing the wall it's a better fit. You'd lose a bit of adventure in LF though. Having now checked the papers it's odd how the rumors have Manny going to the Angels yet I see no names as to who would come back, but then again when it comes to moving players with colossal contracts these things happen. Ah, that'll be something to look forward to if he progresses. Though one has to be careful when people pick 3 stats (such as doubles, homers and steals), pick a level (such as 40, teens, and 50), pick an age when it was done (22) and position (ss) and then say only these people have done that and they grew up to do this, such a list was made for Hanley Ramirez a few weeks ago and man oh man, though I've forgotten the names that he keeps company with they were BIG names. He and Cabrera make a great cornerstone for a team. I hope the fans down there can appreciate that. As for the Phils, sure, I'll root for them to get the WC. I've got a young nephew out there who wasn't around to see that lovable '93 team. Must be cool to be 11 years old and have Howard on your team.

Why on earth would you want Sheffield? He's going to be 38 years old this November. Sure, he may have some pop left in the bat, but unless Papi is going to work at being a fulltime first baseman that means you have Manny if LF & Sheffield in RF. Sheff's range factor (while not a perfect measure) is below the league's. And RF in Fenway is a huge one. You've been very fortunate to have had decades of great defensive outfielders with Dewey & Nixon. Even Bruno was better than average. I think trying to get fulltime RF work out of him is big trouble. I envision singles dropping in front of him, doubles in the corner turning into triples. I mean he's not a horrible fielder, but there's a lot of ground to cover in Fenway. And his arm isn't much either. A better use of resources would be to use the money to acquire whatever they'd lose in trying to the SS back from Florida. (Whew that kid is amazing.) But that's not going to happen. While the Red Sox are able to spend their way out of trouble better than any team but the Yanks, I think it's foolish to spend that kind of money on guys that old, even when it works. It can work, like Molitor with the Blue Jays (though he was "just" 36) or Winfield (who was 40), I just worry that it can become habit forming. For all the talk of free spending teams like the Yanks or the other exteme with the Moneyball example, maybe people should pay more attention to how the front office in Minnesota is doing things. If there's a bigshot OF prospect in your farm system 2 years away then I suppose a year of Sheffield might be tolerable. Actually there's a chance that this talk of the Red Sox wanting Sheffield is just being done to try to get the Yanks to resign him or throw too much money at him. If that's the case, job well done.

Stereo recordings released as MONO only, cuz tapes were lost
Quincy replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Discography
I'll be durned. It's strange how sometimes something like that can be missed, but I suppose there's so much to deal with I hadn't ever really noticed it was in mono. <Insert David Byrne slapping forehead repeatedly emoticon.> -
Yanow Is Here
Quincy replied to AllenLowe's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Don't know if we're thinking of two different books because the "Jazz on Record"... You probably are as the Magnificent Goldberg lives in Wales. It's a title that has been used a few times, including by the subject of this thread. -
You can make it easier on yourself if you just figure on eventually getting almost everything, if not everything, over the course of a lifetime. If you do that then it's easier to buy what shows up used or on sale. Just make sure you eat right and take care of yourself. Given that however, better grab at least one of the live Columbia sets now! (I was stunned to see It Club was going OOP, as you'd think the cover shot alone would attract buyers.) My favorite between It Club, Jazz Workshop and Tokyo changes, but most of the time I think Tokyo is my favorite of the 3. I happened to come across Jazz Workshop used, otherwise I probably wouldn't have gotten it just out of guilt that I should try other things. The only negative thing I can say about Tokyo is that the 2 discs combined are just barely over 80 minutes and then they put it in a quad case. But what it lacks in quantity it makes up for. While it's semi-popular to give a little dig to the Columbia years vs. Blue Note/Riverside/Prestige, there are times when it feels like Rouse understood him better than anybody. When you feel that way too, go ahead and pick any Columbia you come across. For what's it's worth I like the other studio Columbias more than Monk's Dream too. Love the ones Lon suggests but also Monk & Straight, No Chaser too.

More Devilin Tunes, Open Boxes, Vol. 2
Quincy replied to AllenLowe's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Thought I'd throw in a superficial comment or 2 as it's the only kind I'm qualified at. Lest folks who haven't bought this yet think it's some sort of dry historical thing, you couldn't be more wrong. One night whilst drinking a wee bit of bourbon I had on discs 5 & 6 (or was it 6 & 7? - it was good bourbon) on from the 2nd collection (Vol. 2, 1927-1934.) Lemme tell ya, thanks to the selection of songs & sequencing, these discs worked like only the best mix tapes do. And uh, if you have some sort of negative perception of the author/compiler/one-man-band, or are a highly loyal charter member of the Dexter Gordon fanclub, DON'T let that get in the way of getting this (or these) set(s). The delightfully packaged sets also don't hog shelf space either. -
How long since y'all played that bonus disc from The Grateful Dead Movie? Whew-eeeeeeee, I've got mine on with subtitles. It's been too long, but then again I guess it's aged just right too. It's so warm, especially after some gray days. And here I thought if I was going to be doing any Dead I'd be heading to Sept. '72, but this feels right too! edit - And check out those subtitles too, especially for "Sugaree." They hyphen where needed, such as kno-ow me, sha-ake it, and so on.

Still waiting, still dreaming. But I like what I'm reading.

A Dodger friend of mine was saying the same thing when I brought up yesterday's Dodger-Padres game (brought it up before the game actually.) I mentioned how in 15 to 20 years a lot of people will forget that the NL sucked this year, and when they run down a list of pennant winners they'll see whoever wins it and it will count just like all the other pennant winners. So you might as well root for your team. The AL pennant winner could always have a playoff injury to makes things more even. Though it might take more than one injury.

Yes indeed! It's one of those cds where it's easy as pie to get the feel for side A & side B.

Yeah, not a lot of new info there. Good to hear the feedback. Read Blair's book but have passed on McNally's as I felt it was too soon since I picked up the former. Blair's site has outtakes from his book arranged by chapter. As he's writing about Jerry & the Dead, there has to be unreleased stuff to share. An American Life outtakes

And so was I! That ump cost me a trip to the fantasy championship. (To the ump) You bastard! Ok, back to reality.* Edited - Actually not. I forgot the Yanks-Red Sox played another double header. Posada led the way, I'm in!

Classic rock? That's a frightening concept! Hey, though it could be for all I know, as what used to be classic rock is often called "oldies." In fact, I was at a bar near campus last week and there was a flyer for a "90s Night" coming up. NINETIES NIGHT?!? Same story with me, including my rarely shopping there. Only thing different is how I spell my first name. Probably wrong I'm guessing.

With new releases I think my record is 3 out 5 shipped in the past year. I ordered 2 RVGs from the last batch. One shipped in a couple of days of ordering, the other took an extra week. When ordering things that aren't new releases their record is much more spotty. Sometimes within a month they'll fess up and say they can't get it, another time the order was open for 3 months before I finally shot an email asking them to cancel it. To their credit they replied to that promptly. A couple of times I've let them go at it for 10 weeks and they did come through, so if you're patient... I'm back to using them as alldirect.com is no more. Seems to be the way to go when I don't want to order enough discs to justify using CD Universe.

How about a vibes approach? Teddy Charles - New Directions A few more that I don't think have been mentioned yet: Kenny Dorham - The Complete 'Round About Midnight At The Cafe Bohemia (trumpet) Bobby Jaspar - Modern jazz au club St-Germain (tenor sax) Hampton Hawes - Everybody Like Hampton Hawes (piano) Like Big Al I love the Blakey RCA with McLean, though the live one from Birdland ain't bad either!

48 reviews so far on beeradvocate.com, scoring an 84 which translates to "worth a try." I'm a big fan of the brewery, as North Coast's Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout has been one of my regulars this summer. Love their barley wine (though I age it 1-3 years) and their Red Seal Ale is nice. A Belgian is a whole 'nother matter though. Scanning through the reviews I get the impression that it's not making a great impression with those who know Belgians. Some complain that it lacks in complexity, others note that while it's okay, if you're going to spend $7 you might as well get a better Belgian. I do wonder if aging would help, though I'm more curious about a tangentially named jazz beer by Dogfish called Pangaea. "Brewed with ingredients from every continet (crystallized ginger from Australia, water from Antarctica, basmati rice from Asia, etc...), this is slightly spicy ale, with a mouthful of rich flavors." It's the crystalized ginger that has me curious, not the ingredient from every continet part.

Started to post this in the "solo rock acts you might not have heard of" thread (or something like that), but it didn't feel right. And since it does feature Jerry on it.... David Crosby Billboard link Article highlights: "David Crosby's five-decade career will be the subject of the boxed set "Voyage," due Nov. 21 via Rhino. The same day, the label will also release a CD/DVD edition of Crosby's 1971 solo debut, 'If I Could Only Remember My Name.'" ...and a jam with Jerry Garcia, "Kids and Dogs."...."Kids and Dogs" can also be found on the new "If I Could Only Remember My Name," which is offered in a 5.1 Surround Sound mix on the DVD alongside photos and rare video clips."

The other thread is titled something like are some OJC limited editions going OOP. <-------click Give 'em at least another week, or even 2. If you get impatient during week 4, give customer service a call. A fellow named Jackson will work wonders for ya.

One you can get at Flicks & Picks (talking Eugene OR here ) though I think it's just on VHS (ask at the counter) is Diane Keaton's "Heaven." People describing what they think heaven is like interspersed with some unusual and amusing movie clips of what heaven is like.

That's the spirit! However, if you're going to hang around here you might want to consider aquiring carpentry skills if you don't already have them, as you'll be needing some new shelves for your cds. Oh, and you can't have enough excess space, believe me, it'll be used up waaaaaaaaaay before you'd imagine. P.S. - The Mosaic & Box Set forum is a dangerous place.
