3rd track was my favorite. Doesn’t usually bother me too much but the way the amped bass shades this excellent guitar work is my only criticism. Great playing all around though and love the song.

1. Some nice parts but overall I’m having a hard time getting into this song. Maybe a recording snafu but the sax sounds ethereal in places which is pretty cool. No guesses. Warming up to the track toward the end when things start coming together more. 2. Sounds Cuban. And sounds like a familiar standard but I can’t name it. I’m guessing a trombone on that first solo and wow is it understated. Arrangement comes across as Benny Goodman goes to Havana - or maybe Woody Herman. I don’t think it’s either one of them, but I think it’s possible they’re an influence on the bandleader. 3. Cheers to the bass player. They are holding it down serious. Tenor sounds close to Johnny Griffin. Trumpet reminds me of Hubbard and maybe on a bad day? There was a nice part to that solo but then it was like he got fenced in and just danced around for a bit. 4. Such a huge difference here as far as the bass player is concerned. Not that they’re bad here, but definitely a more languid approach and maybe the song calls for that. Song btw is kind of a good slow burner but then it peters out some. The kind of song that would really take off if Pharaoh Sanders was involved. 5. Maybe my favorite song so far. I like how they’re executing this idea. No guesses. 6. Sounds like a JMs song. Not sure though. This meanders and makes good background music. 7. I dig the cello(?). They and the guitarist play very well together. Maybe not David Darling…struggling to make a guess here. 8. I usually like songs like this so maybe it’s just me today. Not tracking with this one. 70s stuff with Rhodes and in need of an editor overall. Guitarist threatens to take this somewhere…Rhodes man steps in to help, but it dies with the bassist. No guesses. 9. This is like Jazz does Carnegie Hall or something like that. Props to the drummer. They’re the best thing here. 10. Cool little solo sax ditty. Nice song, no guesses. 11. Now this sounds like a JMs tune too. Better than 6 though. Pharoah-ish sax, at least a little toward the end of that solo. Love what the drums and bass are doing throughout. No guesses but this is a really good song. 12. Going out on the funk tip. Nice breakbeat. Cool song but I have no idea. Sorry, some of these takes are a bit harsh but that doesn’t indict any of these tracks as bad music. Just my first takes of each song. Will likely revisit. Definitely enjoyed the listen! Thanks for putting this together.

Didn’t put 2 & 2 together on geography there but definitely interesting and appropriate! also looking forward to the next season of this series.

Those lyrics are fantastic

I read more nuance in his statement. Rather than a broad slagging of the genre, it reads like he’s saying club shows he’s seen aren’t what he’d reference as jazz. Maybe he’s been seeing some hacks or hobbyists to come to this conclusion, or maybe whatever style being performed just wasn’t to his liking. He actually comes across as possibly having familiarity with the style and perhaps having an opinion on what he likes as “jazz.”

Interesting. Thanks 👍

How is quad different from surround?
-
Actually, it may have only been on Apple Music since the show was on Apple TV.
-
Defiant Jazz was the playlist Helly picked as a reward in Apple TVs Severence. That playlist then showed up on streaming platforms last year. Good set and awesome to hear McPhee getting promoted like that.

Ah, well it'll be interesting to see who it is.

Then my final guess will be Martino, even though it doesn't really sound like him.

I'll take June 👍

1 - Psych elements on that guitar like Szabo, but it's not his sound. Getting some Coryell vibes though. Definite mood track. Really enjoy that psych rock lean. 2 - All right - interesting. The band is jamming. Drummer has a hard time in spots but the synths carry it. 3 - Ok tune. Organist carries it by handling that bass line. 5 - This is like if Bobo Stenson wanted to swing. Strong presence from that pianist. Bass & drums are locked in and follow whoever it is on the keys into the song. 6 - Love the melody on the head. 70s tune? Not so in love with the bass solo even though they're obviously very good. 7 - Not the first song in this BFT with that 70s rock groove. The pianist takes em there but I sense the band doesn't necessarily need to follow him. They do though. Works out ok. 8 - Some real beautiful moments here. The sax (soprano?) has a great sound. 9 - Helluva triumphant opening segued into a noir-ish piece. Mood! Bass clari stealing the show until the sax shows up. 10 - I like it, and like what the sax player is doing. Would almost prefer the pianist not be there. 12 - Another good one. Nice bari sax on another noir composition. 13 - Dig the trio. Giraldi-esque playing. Good song. Thanks for putting this together! Coffey?

Ended at $6100. Someone just paid Carolina Soul’s rent for the month. -
Track 3 vibes player sounds a bit sloppy actually. Like they know what they're trying to play but having some trouble getting there. Red Norvo? Bass sounds like some Pablo recording shit. Good player but damn... Track 8 vibist (?) in contrast runs clean, definitely executing what they want to do and you can hear the melody coming through. Not exactly "better" than track 3's player but definitely different. Not ready for a guess here just yet.

Damn Pryor is shocking. Nice set!

Yeah, I’ve bid on a few and won some from the cheap seats in the past. Their good rep has been well earned. They have albums from all genres that will creep into the thousands just about every auction. -

Carolina Soul has great eBay presence and their auctions tend to run high because of a large following that includes international customers. I just saw this today and will watch it just to see how much it goes for.
