  1. Well information seems to be somewhat limited about this group, but Larry Young's name peaked my interest, and I know who Joe Gallivan is (own Innocence) and so I thought I'd ask around here to see if anyone knows anymore than the two paragraphs that keep reappearing in my Google search. Did anyone see this band? Were they only active in 1972? And then there's the New Jazz cd that came out in 1997 that now seems long OOP. I'm under the impression that music recorded in 72 was never released until this cd issue. Is that accurate? I just scored a copy of this cd for $8 and its now being shipped out, but I would like to know if anyone else has a copy and what your impression is. There's also a limited edition 2 record set that came out awhile back. What's on this set, as it seems to have more music than the cd. Thanks for any info in advance. HG
  2. Yes indeed. That and 'Wonderland' are the extent of my Ellis collection. Slick band on 'Wonderland,' as I'm sure you know. Listening now. Yup own these too; great discs these are indeed.
  3. I think I remembered hearing somewhere that it was a sax player (maybe they recorded together early on in their career in Cleveland?). Can't recall the name though.; don't think it was a well-known name though either.
  4. I'd plunk down for that; the two Dixon Soul Notes I have are really good, "Thoughts" in particular. Don't know if its been suggested already but would a Andrew Cyrille box be out of the question? I have three of his leader dates and they are all very well worth having. edit for leaving out a word.
  5. Prefer the quintet tracks over the Nelson arrangements, but don't mind them there. Worth it for those tracks with Henderson alone.
  6. I'm curious as to how many of Esquire's readers knew who he was when this add came out.

    Anthony Braxton

This is good news. I have a couple of titles on Braxton House, but missed a bunch of them when they first came out. Maybe he'll consider reprinting the back catalog as there is a lot of great music there. All 8 CDs are still in stock at Downtown Music Gallery. Really??? Aren't these as rare as hen's teeth nowadays? I purchased Sextet (Istanbul) 1996 from DMG a couple of months ago. Price seemd very fair and in no way over-inflated considering limited availability - not a "hen's teeth' price. Definitely advise you check them out if you are interested in the Braxton Houses Big thumbs up for the Instanbul date.

  10. Second this. Wish DIW would've used the original Artist's House album cover, which is pretty badazz.
  11. Metheny's "Song X" although I think he may be co-credited.
  12. If there's a Dunkin Donuts around, I highly recommend their French vanilla coffee; it is out of this world.
  13. Man, RIP. Just picked up "Nothing But the Blues" a couple of weeks ago and it has surely convinced me that this man can play. Besides "Ellis in Wonderland" I have nothing else by him, but these two dates are really really good.
  14. Yeah, I echo the sentiments above, its good but not on par with the BN's. If not for the music, the album cover is badazzz. Worth buying it for the album cover alone!
  15. "...Advisor at Andrew Hill High School, decided to build his own black-box theater on campus, he dissed Mr. Putnam Hill and named the venue after Andrew Hill the pianist instead. It's called Smokestack Theater, after Hill's classic 1963 album of the same name."
  16. That one white spot on your cat's chest kind of reminds me of the white portion of Ayler's beard, so name'm Ayler.
  17. "fasten brastraps and remove dentures, very bumpy road"
  18. If I had to choose, I'd pick Albert Ayler's "Holy Ghost" off of Live in Greenwich Village: The Complete Impulse Recordings; it still knocks me sideways everytime I hear it.

That would be AWESOME. Love the original lp cover.
