  1. Man, that is a tough line of thought but I don't disagree with you. Shepp's change of approach - as he sees it, back to the way he played before meeting Cecil - might take quite a bit of unpacking, and that Sackville LP is terrible. It's really hard because, after a point and for some people, playing 'free' or non-changes-based open music can eventually box one in or become tiresome. One wants to see what else there is - not everybody is a Bill Dixon, Roscoe Mitchell or Anthony Braxton. Trouble is, we don't want to hear Dewey or Archie play "in the pocket," even though at times both were good at it. The blues - and maybe Allen can speak to this - is surely at the heart of Dewey's playing, but again, that isn't everything in this music.
  2. I'd be interested to know what he's up to these days. Hope he's doing well. Conflict is a very nice LP - well, both of his Contemporary recs are highlights.
  3. Thornton's daughter (I think) has his archives and tapes, and did not want them to be used, but otherwise gave Corbett/UMS carte blanche to do what they wished. The reissue was taken from three sealed copies as well as a tape of part of the session(s) that McPhee had in his collection.
  4. Would that we were all so lucky. I seem to turn my girlfriends onto, then off of, the very same music.
  5. I believe she recorded at least one folk LP for Verve Forecast (or Verve Folkways). Dunno otherwise. She's also on this Victor LP. In case you were wondering what happened to Jaime Faunt, he's on it too. Edit again: here is her myspace.
  6. He's great. Welcome, and do stick around.
  7. Well they played together in France too... I think the Bobby Jones who played with Mingus was a little too young in the 70s to have played on some 40s Red Nichols sides, but that's just my guess.
  8. Mingus is Mingus! Anybody familiar with the Bobby Jones LPs on Cobblestone and Enja?
  9. I spin Pre-Bird quite a bit as far as the Ming goes. The Uptown collection is indeed fascinating. Seems like the band w/ Bobby Jones represented on the America LPs doesn't get much love. I like that group a lot also.
  10. Third. I really, really like the 50s "third-stream" Mingus (I know, that's not what it is, but whatever). Teo, LaPorta, Clem DeRosa... all fantastic.
  11. Hate to encourage Allen, but I thought it was funny. Me too. More of that Allen, please.
  12. Laurie Allan is a dude, I'm pretty sure. Played with Keith Tippett, Lol Coxhill, and a little with the BoB later on.
  13. Anyone know if Amazon.fr ships over c's?
  14. I see two big street teams right there. Oof.
  15. No, that was the single that predated Superfuzz. Side B is: "No One Has" / "If I Think" / "In 'n Out of Grace"
  16. Indeed. I have most of that on LP. Do they get much love/like around here? No free jazz in the box set forum!
  17. Mudhoney - Superfuzz Bigmuff - (Sub Pop OG) Incredible b-side.
  18. Want it. Definitely keep your eyes peeled at Dusty Groove - seems like something they might carry.
  19. Sorry to hear that. Hope all goes well. He's scheduled to play in Texas in January with Frode.
  20. Are you calling Miles "yella?"
  21. I remember that, martini, and as I was a broke student at the time (still broke, no longer a student) I couldn't pull the trigger. Oops.
  22. Argo, Deram, Fontana, Vertigo - all good quality pressings, from what I know.
  23. The few Disconformes I've had have been bad needle drops, and I chucked 'em.
