  2. I almost voted for the Rich because I really am intrigued by it and like the albums within I've hears. I've both the Dizzy and the Jazz Crusader sets. . . I voted for the Jazz Crusaders. It's just so fun from start to finish, has a "Christmas gift" feel to it.

    Pepper Adams

I was just marveling yet again at his work (and EVERYONE's!) on "Royal Flush." So good this is out domestically now. Pepper. . . well I don't think he ever disappoints!
  4. Well, you have some amazing music to absorb. I'm glad you got the box. It's one of the best box sets ever made. Up there with the Mosaic Charlie Parker box in my estimation of great boxes that really offer up something solid and new to fans.

    Uptown. . .

Someone said here on this board, I remember vaguely and painfully, that. . . it isn't going to happen~!

    What are you Questioning Evan?
  7. I think 90% of New Grass is awesome! I like that one more each time I listen closely.
  8. I agree with that solid advice. . . . And yet, I sort of disagree, because if you have those dollars the Holy Ghost box. . . well it's such a great investment, the book (and I mean BOOK) that comes with it, the interviews, the copious material. . . . I know ME and in your shoes I'd grab the box set and then concentrate on getting his other material. . . chronologically. Because I think if you get the box, and already loving those two releases you have, you'll be getting it all over time.
  9. I hear a real sincerity in those late sides, and I respond to it. I believe he really wanted to get "the message" across and at least on an emotional level I think he did, I feel communicated to emotionally by these albums. They fit into the entire work I feel, I don't think they HAD to have had outside influences to come to fruition, I feel his investment within them. Or I'm imagining it all, and enjoying the fantasy.
  10. Yo, that would be massive! I'd rather just see Columbia reissues of the remaining not on cd. Time to play some Brubeck!
  11. Supposed to be the coldest night ever this year tonight. If we get sleet it's going to shut down half the city. (They're wimps here with ice.) Bring it on!
  12. I agree with Al. Well I don't. There are so many versions of this tune. . . this is not one of my favorite ones. But . . . you go guys!
  13. And the new RVG sounds pretty darned good! (Especially compared to the Mosaic).
  14. Guy, In your shoes, there I would be.
  15. I haven't heard it, or other Past Perfect boxes, but I've heard a few single discs. Sound quality was decent. This is likely a good, well priced intro to a lot of Bird sides, may do the ttick for you.
  16. Some of it was also out on a Bluebird cd.
  17. I think the Mildred Bailey is one of the finest of their sets, actually. For me, when I want to be contemplative and have that stiff drink. . . Herbie Nichols. Even when swinging it's ass off, this music is deep.
  18. I HATE the original "Casino Royal," and not because it's a Bond spoof. No, I hate it because its a complete MESS. Because it's the only occasion when three of the most talented directors collaborated (Woody Allen, Orson Welles, and John Huston) and it's one of the worst movies ever made. And because it completely WASTES Peter Sellers. Huh. I disagree entirely! But not for the first time.
  19. I DO love the original Casino Royale; laugh my ass off. Have to see that one again soon. Want to see the new one soon as well. And as it has been about six months since I've been at a theater, I'd really enjoy it.
  20. Took a break from my Armstrong/Whiteman book by Berrett to read "The Crack in Space," one of the funniest of Phil K. Dick's books. Now back on the Berrett.
  21. I was definitely influenced by the music I heard in my home. My dad had Bach, Beethoven and Mozart mainly in the classical world, organ music records as well (because he had researched the life of my great great great great great grandfather David Tannenberg, who was a pipe organ builder) by E. Power Biggs and others, and swing music by Miller, Goodman, and even a few Ellingtons. My mom had a few Brubecks (Jazz at Oberlin, Time Further Out, and Bossa Nova USA) and a few singers (Haymes, Clooney) she listened to. Oh, and dad is a Gershwin nutball, has all kinds of George all the time.
  22. Bought a few booster packs, and with last month's allotment of tracks took care of the RLR items I needed (already had the Chets on disc) and with this month's allotted tracks and some booster, downloaded the Bill Evans "Secret Sessions" box set.
  23. At least part of the problem is a fatty liver (I was wrong), but I have no pain there. The other is the IBS I've had since July '05, Now that I'm having significant temps, my Dad's doctor is suggesting Diverticulitis. My appointment with the internal medicine specialist was canceled 45 min. before the appt., but I insisted that I get a doctor who would look at me that day. Naturally, she ordered more tests. I hope everyone had a nice holiday and they're feeling better. ...hope you're back to feeling better soon!!! m~ ME TOO!
  24. You too Bill! I'm thankful for our friendship.
  25. That's true, tomorrow the list might change, indeed. I feel that way as well. I agree about the first Hill Select, and I have the second set waiting for me at home, get to hear it soon, I bet it's excellent as well. Select wise, here's my top five: Hill Blue Note Randy Weston Bennie Green Art Pepper Bechet!
