OK - While at Bobby's memorial concert last night, I thought of one more that might have been my first.
So to sum up, it was one of these three: Red Clay, Swiss Movement or San Francisco.
Saw the SFJAZZ Collective on Thursday. This year's tribute is Miles, and it was one of the best shows I've seen from those guys. When artists interpret Miles it can sometimes sound derivative or they are trying too hard to replicate his sound. This group made each Miles piece sound fresh and the new compositions complimented the covers extremely well. The musicianship all around was excellent, as well.
Can't see them at Yoshi's tomorrow, but will see most of the band on Sunday at the Bobby Hutcherson Memorial concert at SFJAZZ. Also, will see them when they come back this way in Feb. at SFJAZZ.
Well ............ now it's more confusing than ever! I'm starting to think that your first guess is the most probable (if it happened at all); that it was a different show altogether.
Thanks, Lon. From what I've heard of this new album, it didn't sound at all sloppy or that he was being overly flamboyant, either. That's why I brought that up.
Nice to know that I wasn't imagining the "story," anyway. Good research!
Listened to most of it. Great, as expected.
I find myself drawn to the Band of Gypsys more than I ever thought I would. It's really too bad that it didn't work out and they didn't record more material. I've said this before, but Dagger Records' "Baggy's Rehearsal Sessions" is one of my favorite jamming albums.
Question for you Jimi-philes (Lon?): I thought I read somewhere that in this first show Jimi pulled out a lot of his theatrical bits and was not well focused. Between sets Bill Graham told him to 'cut the crap' and play. In the second set he basically stood in place and proceeded to play one of his best performances ever. Am I remembering that right?
This website was launched when the first book came out. It hasn't been updated in a while, but still has some good information in it.
The Jazz Loft Project
They're going to be at Yoshi's next month, and most of them will also be at Bobby Hutcherson's memorial concert at SFJAZZ that same week. Then they come back to SFJAZZ for a few days in February - in the very intimate Joe Henderson Lab. I'll be there!
I'm mulling over seeing Billy Hart Quartet (w/Ethan Iverson, Mark Turner & Ben Street) tomorrow night at SFJAZZ. I've seen them before, and while not a big Mark Turner fan, it's still high-level music. Another plus is that they're playing in the VERY intimate Joe Henderson Lab.
Very impressive lineup for the Bobby Hutcherson Memorial Concert at SFJAZZ next month. Should be a very emotional night. Yes, I picked up tickets!
