romualdo Posted November 21, 2024 Report Posted November 21, 2024 just found a second hand copy (CDs) here in Australia - wonderful stuff - Mosaic has done quite a service wrt JT with two dedicated sets (Capitol 50s & Roulette) plus partial (Classic Capitol, Commodore, HRS, Okeh/Brunswick (Beiderbecke), Savory, V-Disc) Quote
jazzbo Posted November 21, 2024 Report Posted November 21, 2024 Yes, I love Teagarden's work and there are plenty of sides on Mosaic to enjoy. Quote
mikeweil Posted November 22, 2024 Report Posted November 22, 2024 This afternoon, James P. Johnson, Disc One Quote
T.D. Posted November 27, 2024 Report Posted November 27, 2024 I like this one a lot, but it's never commanded much of a price in the "secondary market". Quote
exponent_of_sock Posted December 5, 2024 Report Posted December 5, 2024 Finally grabbed the Bunny Berigan Brunswick/Parlophone/Vocalion set the other day. The sound quality is overall decent for the time, but many of the tracks in the first half, especially the first CD, could benefit from being redone someday due to being over-declicked, causing distortion in the hottest brass passages. ghost of miles Posted December 10, 2024 Report Posted December 10, 2024 So many good collections in the old Mosaic Select line: Quote

Hadn't listened to the Louis Armstrong Decca set in a while either...halfway through the first disc...also over-declicked... Quote
T.D. Posted December 18, 2024 Report Posted December 18, 2024 This is a not-so-popular Mosaic, but I've listened to the whole thing twice fairly recently and it's really grown on me. Quote

It’s always been popular in this admittedly Hoosier-partisan household. Prime JJ, and excellent notes by Loren Schoenberg as well. Quote
T.D. Posted December 24, 2024 Report Posted December 24, 2024 Lot of Bobby Jaspar on the J J set, too. I wasn't referring to aesthetic merit (whatever that is), but to the fact that J J seems to trade for rather low prices (e.g. discogs). Now on Farmer/Golson Quote
John Tapscott Posted December 24, 2024 Report Posted December 24, 2024 Cecil McBee - a tremendous bass player. Quote

I got the Slugs' albums way back in the 70's and have always been favorites. McBee, Tolliver and many others will both be at the NYC Winter JazzFest tribute to Strata-East in a few weeks. Really looking forward to that show! Quote

miles65 Posted December 25, 2024 Report Posted December 25, 2024 The Vanguard set. Disc 6. I was underwhelmed by the first 2 discs. i can't put my finger on it why. Sir Charles Thompson has a good session. Joe Newman session great. Buck Clayton never disappoints me. Neither does Jimmy Rushing. Sound quality is great. Quote
jazzbo Posted December 25, 2024 Report Posted December 25, 2024 I've been listening to the discs in order, twice each, up to disc IV. All this Vanguard material is familiar to me, and I LOVE it, but the sound here is TOPS. Quote
