ghost of miles Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 I just pulled out the Andrew Hill Blue Note 1963-66 set for some late-night listening and in so doing realized that it's the first Mosaic set I ever got--way back in late 1995, not long after it was released. My friend Sascha had hipped me to the label during a conversation at the record store where I worked at the time, and the Hill set hooked me right away (when I bought it, the only CD I had of his was JUDGMENT). What was your first Mosaic set? Quote
Eric Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 My first was the very first - the Monk Blue Note set. Christmas 1984 (or was it 1985). Quote
Dave Garrett Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 Mine was the Ellington Reprise set. Had my eye on it for a while before finally taking the plunge, thus opening the floodgates. Quote
brownie Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 Herbie Nichols came first in the mid 80s.. Mosaic was a vinyl only label back then! Quote
John L Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 T-Bone Walker, immediately after release. Quote

sidewinder Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 (edited) I think it was the Hill set - or maybe it was my first Jackie McLean 'partial' set (it had already sold out). Edited October 27, 2013 by sidewinder Quote

jazzbo Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 My first Mosaic was the Blakey and the Jazz Messengers set. A fine on indeed! Saw it advertised in a magazine and went for it. So glad I did. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 I started with two at once! In June 2000, I got the Horace Parlan and Blue Mitchell boxes all in one box. MG Quote
king ubu Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 Tristano/Konitz/Marsh ... first one, bought while in high school, huge hassle (and expenses) then, had to pay by sending an IMO (took two weeks or so to arrive, then I waited 2-3 months for surface shipping - which turned out to be the safest way and the one most often to slip through customs without causing any additional expenses, so I gladly - yet impatiently - waited). After that, I started picking them up in groups of two or three to six .... other ones I got early on include the Basie Roulette live, the Giuffre, Chico Hamilton, Lee Morgan, but I'm really not sure about the sequence after the TKM which kind of caused an avalanche Quote
crisp Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 I didn't hear about Mosaic until we first got the internet at work. I recall being amazed and delighted that you could get complete sets of JJ Johnson on Columbia and Teddy Wilson on Verve. What was available in shops (B&M) was so piecemeal by comparison. Anyway, I always bought in multiples amounting to 12 discs to capitalise on the overseas shipping rate, so my first purchase was three 4-disc sets: Jack Teagarden on Capitoi Kenton Presents Stuff Smith on Verve Still remember the thrill of opening the package and working my way through them. I bought the Johnson and Wilson in my next batch and both are still among my favourites. One day I hope to have the nerve to buy the ones that were already oop when I heard of Mosaic and which now cost big bucks: Shearing, Clayton, both Basie Roulettes, Condon, Ferguson and, of course, Nat Cole. One day... Quote
Justin V Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 The Paul Chambers Mosaic Select, which began my love affair with the great Donald Byrd's music. Quote
king ubu Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 Don Cherry, circa 1995? That one was gone when I "joined" (1997 I assume, maybe 1998 - the TKM came somewhen in 1997, but it took me a few months after reading and clipping a rewiew to figure out how to get hold of it ... and then surface shipping took another pair of months). I didn't get on to Mosaic untill the 2000s and sets like that were long gone by the time I cottoned on to Mosaic's website. The ones I missed have taken some rooting out over the years.
