Milestones Posted May 26, 2020 Report Posted May 26, 2020 I doubt any were officially named Sonny at birth, but Sonnys are abundant in jazz: Sonny Rollins Sonny Clark Sonny Stitt Sonny Criss Sonny Simmons Sonny Red I'm sure there are more. Quote
Rabshakeh Posted May 26, 2020 Report Posted May 26, 2020 Murray? He’s technically a “Sunny” but you see it spelt with an “o” sometimes (e.g., “Sonny’s Time Now”). Quote

Big Beat Steve Posted May 26, 2020 Report Posted May 26, 2020 (edited) If Sunny Murray is included, then include Sunny Clapp (also refered to as Sonny here and there) too And then, moving into other periods of jazz that otherwise tend to get overlooked: Sonny Burke Sonny Dunham - and Sonny Boy WILLIAMS too! And not to forget Sonny Thompson Edited May 26, 2020 by Big Beat Steve Quote

In some circles (corners, actually), rumor has it that he faked his own death. But until you see him in the flesh, actually playing...don't believe them rumors. Quote
duaneiac Posted May 27, 2020 Report Posted May 27, 2020 Unfortunately, the man is all but forgotten today, but Stan Getz had a younger brother -- Sidney, aka "Sonny" -- who tried to pursue a career as a jazz trumpet player. He was a pretty good musician, but due to a combination of personal demons and standing in the shadow of his more famous sibling, his career never really took off. There appears to be no recorded legacy of his musicianship, but his playing impressed quite a few people back in the day -- so much so that some one even wrote a song in honor of his musical talent. Perhaps you have heard of "When Sonny Getz Blew". Quote
