I saw Sonny at Cain Park in Cleveland Heights around 1990--definitely one of the most astonishing concerts I ever attended.

Me too, back in 2001 at Severance Hall, in Cleveland. This was before the 9/11 attacks. It was an awesome concert! Thank you, for all the great music!

I've missed him since he stopped playing.  I think I saw him in every decade in which he was still playing and in every city I've lived in since the'60s.

I only saw him live twice, in 1992 at the Caravan of Dreams in Fort Worth, and in 1993 at the Vancouver Jazz Festival.

One of my All Time favorite jazz musicians. 

I saw him live about 4 times. The first time was in Detroit when he had the quartet with Don Cherry.

Another time in a New York City club  when the Japanese guitar player was in his Quartet.

And in a concert at Monroe Community College in Rochester New York.

Finally in a concert at the University of Arizona here in Tucson.

A titan has left us.  I saw him in Portland on his last west coast tour. The ticket for that concert sits in a frame on my wall. I'll be playing a lot of wonderful music today.

Are any jazz stations playing Sonny and/or Miles today?   The one in Cleveland is not.  I checked some others and they aren't either.  You would think they would honor these great masters.

Playing both Miles and Sonny on KCRW  (not a jazz station) in LA  this morning.

There is a very good article on Sonny Rollins in this mornings New York Times.

I found one comment  especially interesting.

He was the last survivor from the classic photo by Art Kane - Harlem 1958

There is an enlarged framed copy of that photo hanging on my wall. After reading that comment, I walked over to the photo and located Sonny Rollins in the midst of all those wonderful jazz musicians .

A friend of mine was the house pianist in a bass, drums and piano trio at a jazz club on LawnGuyland and Sonny was the guest artist one weekend. 

As soon as he came in, he told the three musicians they could pack up their instruments and go home if they wanted to, he was going to play the whole four hour gig alone. 

My friend stayed to listen. Sonny played the whole four hours and knocked everyone out!

Its said that when Hawk died, Sonny said: Others would expect that I am sad, but I am happy that he existed. 

Can say the same about Sonny Rollins. 

Saw him only once, in 1979 in Velden, with Mark Soskin, Jerome Harris and Al Foster, maybe the most steady and best quartet he ever had.
