  1. My favourites are Third Reich & Roll, Meet The Residents & Not Available At one stage it was rumoured that Don Van Vliet was a member of the band They played here in Brisbane in the mid 80's - memorable concert (tophat-eye phase) - probably around the time of the Tokyo tour (with Snakefinger) - he wasn't present at our concert though
  2. thanks for the link bichos - all previously unreleased choice material - will get this with my next import CD order
  3. Looks like Karyobin is going to be released in Japan in March (a bit pricey - 2667 yen) http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/UICY-77702
  4. Blue Note released 5 10" LP's of Garner's recordings (recorded in Timme Rosenkrantz's NYC apartment? in late 44-early 45) Doesn't appear these are readily available ATS They have been released over a few CDs from the Chronological Classics series, the Danish Official label (3LP or 2CD) & Charly (Le Jazz) has released half of the tracks on a CD called "The Apartment Sessions, Vol. 1" - doesn't look like they ever did a volume 2. This would be a lovely reissue project as there were also other titles from these sessions released on other labels (Dial, Selmer, Century) - would be great to have all of this material together. Interesting to see what will be reissued in the future since Martha Glaser (Erroll's manager) has donated a lot of his material/recordings to the University of Pittstburgh - the "Concert By The Sea" is a good example of a well done job.
  5. Thanks all, had a feeling it was going to be a dud
  6. Anyone know what this release (late last year) "Ornette!! +3" (Octave label) Listed on CD Japan & HMV Japan but no details http://www.hmv.co.jp/en/artist_Ornette-Coleman_000000000001054/item_Ornette-3_6680501
  7. I was a big fan in the early 70's (when i was 15) & lasted till the late 70's - loved those first 5 or so albums then the Berlin Trilogy with Fripp & Eno involvement (Low, Heroes & Lodger). Lost interest in his work after that. Been playing my Ziggy Stardust vinyl this evening - heard the news a few hours ago I found him more of an alchemist rather than an innovator - I used to have arguments with bowie fans in the 80's re this RIP Davey Jones
  8. RIP Paul
  9. I noticed the "Be-Hive" when i ripped the set to ITunes last week - even pointed it to my partner - I couldn't stop laughing BTW anyone having problems removing the discs from their cases, especially Disc 2 - had to break one of the tabs to finally release it (I'm overcareful these days as I have split a disc in the past trying to remove it - one of the Ellington sets if I remember correctly)
  10. I think the SHM version of Black Orchid (3 Sounds) has a previously unreleased track "Over The Rainbow"
  11. yes please - more Bill!! Fresh Sound have done a double Savoy (early 60's material) that includes all of "Modern Windows Suite" but omits "Motivation" (1972 recording)
  12. Looks like we have a John Coltrane appearance (Earl Bostic & His Orchestra) on Disc 12, titles 20-22 (Moonglow, Ain't Misbehavin', Linger Awhile)
  13. I relented & ordered my copy through Grooves with current 20% discount coupon
  14. The Ellington/Strayhorn/Pettiford/Chaloff material was all originally Mercer 10" releases Wish Mosaic would do a Mercer Box Set!!
  15. The second Vogue Box is now available Jazz From America On Disques Vogue (21CD) - the German Amazon site has the track listing http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B014S1LH9O/ref=s9_simh_gw_p15_d1_i1?pf_rd_m=A3JWKAKR8XB7XF&pf_rd_s=desktop-2&pf_rd_r=0E4GNWM9XANMPNSA7B5H&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=585296387&pf_rd_i=desktop a bit disappointing IMHO - I think I already have about 80% of the material
  16. ordered the Sun Ra Live At Ulm double, a Nabatov (Jazz Limbo) & a fistful of Perelmans (he's prolific on this label)
  17. I have been using CD inner sleeves (very thin & come from Japan) for years - I can keep the CDs in their respective cardboard sleeves with no damage on removing/replacing discs check the link below http://store.soundsourcecds.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=66_73&products_id=212 great idea re the spiral rebinding my booklet is falling apart
  18. this is nice!!! - mostly unreleased Castro but the bonus for me is the involvement of Teddy Edwards & Lucky Thompson probably going to be one of "the" reissues of the year
  19. Love this band & their insane humour - have all of their LPs which I played heavily to my children when young - as a result some songs have now been etched into their psyches e.g. Hunting Tigers Out In India, Mickey's son & Daughter, Beautiful Zelda, Ali Baba's Camel BTW the "Urban Spaceman" single was produced by an Apollo C Vermouth (aka Paul McCartney) I presume the current US band "Death Cab For Cutie" took their name from one of the titles from the Bonzos first album "Gorilla" "The odd boy lay down by the football field, took out a slim volume of Mallarme"………… one of my fav lines
  20. looking forward to this first disc is his 1977 Hat Hut LP (Birth of a Being) while the second is previously unreleased material from the same 1977 sessions - all mastered from the original analogue tapes - no needle drops!!
  21. Gail passed away on October 7 RIP http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/frank-zappas-widow-gail-zappa-dead-at-70-20151007
  22. RIP Coleridge
  23. Popular music needed a giant enema by the mid 70's (bloated prog rock & disco etc) & the response was punk - some of it I didn't like but generally it was energetic & great to listen to - Peel understood this. Also, the economic changes seen in the UK during the 70's i.e. Thatcherism added fuel to the fire. As with any new trend punk rapidly became commodified/commercialised. Many people from the British Pub Rock Scene of the early to mid 70's (proto punk) - Brinsley Schwartz, Drury, Costello, Graham Parker caught onto the coat-tails of this new movement - Peel championed many of these bands - he could see what was happening. I remember Robert Fripp talking about "small units" in the mid seventies as Crimso were dissolving, referring to compact groups. He was also aware of the changes that were occurring within the music scene. I like his late 70's LP's - Exposure, League of Gentlemen etc The "Jazz" element seems peripheral wrt Peel - I know he was a big fan of the Soft Machine (esp the earlier material with Daevid Allen, Kevin Ayers, Robert Wyatt - this was more anarchic & humorous than the later "jazzier" stuff). I've only got the first 4 Softs albums - I actually don't warm to the later post Wyatt material. I have always been on the same page as Peel - looking forward to reading this (after I finish the new Simon Spillett Tubby Hayes text - great read BTW)
  24. this was my first exposure to Spedding in 1975 followed by the two Vertigo Nucleus LP's (what a contrast) - couldn't work out whether he was taking the piss with this single - still I have a soft spot for this - the bike he is riding (BMW 75/5) in the film clip is my current motorcycle
