just ordered a copy in my latest Jazz Messengers haul

I've just noticed that the Hawk Mosaic only contains half of the session. Low Flame/ Allen's Alley are missing. The former is all Hawkins and a very fine performance. I'm aware is not a "complete" set but it's omission is somewhat odd given the small number of tunes from that session. This session always appears to be fragmented on LP & CD releases, one of the reasons being the absence of Coleman on Allen's Alley (Wee), often regarded as the Allen Eager Sextet for this title Low Flame & Allen's Alley were both rereleased on the "Esquire All-American Hot Jazz Sessions" RCA CD Nevertheless, I'm surprised all 4 titles were not included in the Mosaic box (it's an important session)

what a wonderful article - great read!! I presume that soundtrack to a movie (French-Algerian War) he recorded for Blue Note has never been released

Thinking of upgrading my turntable & am interested in having 78rpm capability my choices are 1. Sole 78 turntable eg Rega Planar 78 -> costs about $700 in Australia or 2. Multipurpose (45, 33 & 78) table -> been looking at the Thorens TD 240 mk2 (need to change the cartridge/needle when playing 78's) I don't really have space for 2 turntables so option #2 is my preference Any advice would be appreciated esp re other multipurpose turntables Duals have been mentioned but these don't appear to be available in Australia at present (have had 2 in the past)

Tracks 1-9 are from the original LP (Hey There!) while 11-19 are from Babe's Blues Only track 10 (Billy Boy) appears to be previously unissued All tracks are from one session (Aug 13, 1961) - two titles remain unissued ("In A Mellow Tone" & "Here We Come")

they are "Ruby" & "Nutty" - were released on the Gambit (Sp) CD "Complete At The Five Spot 1958" Lord has these titles with the 5 that were released by Blue Note (Sept 11, 58) whereas Kelley lists these 2 tracks as coming from Late July/Early August 1957 (Ware & Wilson) from a private tape in possession of the Monk family How did Gambit get a hold of these - were they broadcast?

Pharaoh Sanders ESP CD (First Album) Clifford, you may be able to shed more light on this

I've got both Chronoscope CDs & am happy with them - regret not getting SME's Karyobin at the time (this was also on Chronoscope) - this definitely needs reisseuing

My "Folk Baroque" supremo triad of Davy Graham, Bert Jansch & John Renbourn have all now passed (prematurely) - never did get to see Davy or John but was lucky enough to catch Bert a couple of times here in Australia RIP John

The New Zealand "Sarang Bang" label has recently released (late last year) an LP titled "1966" http://www.sarangbang.co.nz/records/artists/bernie-mcgann.html It's two live sessions from 1966 (both recorded in Sydney, one in King's Cross) Quintet & Quartet lineups, extensive liner notes on the LP cover (500 pressed), sound quality is remarkably good Sounds very Colemanish - they even do a version of "When will the Blues Leave" The music (just under 50mins) is also available as a download from Bandcamp

and it sounds so much better than the Collectables version!!

managed to get a copy of this & I was bowled over to see the alternates from the Contemporary sessions - I thought they would have been in the possession of Contemporary

bizarre - wonder why they didn't release it as a double set like it was in its original Hat Art (1997) incarnation? I think this was the first Hat Art 24bit release
