Nice!! - some of Howard McGhee's last sessions Also noticed on the Storyville website that the OOP Monk in Copenhagen CD (1961) is being reissued (the advertising blurb states that this is previously unreleased!!)

The original stereo master for Mingus Presents Mingus was lost at some point. Mosaic used the mono masters since the remaining stereo copies were not good. I've just had a listen to parts of the Mosaic mono Mingus Presents & The Candid Stereo version The mono version is superior as the stereo version has a marked amount of audible tape hiss but doesn't sound muffled (maybe the filtering as described above has been removed) Interestingly though the first 10 seconds of Mingus speak preceding "Original Faubus Fables" has been omitted from the Candid set BTW I bought my Candid stereo version in 2000 (24bit digitally remastered) - this is definitely stereo (looked at the sound file via Audacity) As far as I am aware there were only two Candid releases remastered in this way (in 2000) - look at the bottom of the rear slick & you will find "Digitally remastered at Grace Note by Mark Tomase using IDR & DINR on July 7, 2000" The other was Booker Little's "Out Front" (similarly but done on April 10, 2000) I've never seen another Candid CD with this remastering info (but I may be wrong here - was hoping that this would happen to the whole catalogue so I followed Candid releases closely for the next few years but alas there were no more)

Is that alternate take of T'aint Nobody's.... on the "Candid Dolphy" CD (yet another Candid compilation,this time of Dolphy involvement material) I remember writing to Michael C in the 90's about the possibility of doing another Candid Mosaic - A "Booker Little/Eric Dolphy/Max Roach/Abbey Lincoln" one (that could possibly be done as a Mosaic Select now. I can't recall his response.

I have fond memories of the Mingus Candid box - that was my first Mosaic (the start of my addiction) I think (not at home right now) Michael Cuscuna used the mono tapes for this box, so as far as I am aware it differs from all other CD releases but I could be wrong here

found that site a few weeks ago - quite impressive had never heard of the 1987 Octet Live CD (Japanese Americana - AMC 3002) - is this long OOP? - it's never come up on searches (ebay, amazon, dusty groove, cadence, jazz loft etc) wonder if the single title (Sketches of Drunken Mary) from the compilation CD "Modern Jazz Piano Forum, Interplay Special , Vol. 1" is the same recording as on the recently released Faith CD.

Toshiyo Taenaka recorded Horace for his Interplay label between 78 & 83. Three sessions were released on LP & subsequently CD (In New York, Songs Of The Unsung & Autumn Colours - the latter 2 being released in 2010 by Absorb Music). Recently picked up these three CD's via HMV Japan - the solo (his first) CD (Songs of...) is a bit harsh sounding but I'm happy to hear any of his recordings, studio or live Two other Interplay sessions were also released in Japan last year, namely Faith & Little Afrika - are these new releases from those early 80's sessions or were they previously released (CD or LP) throughout the 80's? Neither the Lord Discography or the Dark Tree book mention/list these two. Any Tapscott fans out there care to comment on either of these?

from my own experience (having a long exposure to "Rock" & its tributaries - didn't properly get into jazz till the early 90's) it's the Detroit connection ie MC5 & the Stooges, both of whom were big fans of Sun Ra (the first MC5 LP, "Kick Out The Jams" had a tribute track to El Sonny) Recently a friend bass guitarist (non jazz) who had lived in Melbourne for years & had jammed with the Nick Cave crowd visited me. As soon as she saw my record/CD collection there was immediate focus & comment on my Sun Ra material (It's cool to mention Sun Ra within the "alternate" rock fraternity).

Has anyone covered the Monk tunes that had lyrics added In the early 60's Columbia considered releasing a vocal Monk album - Martin Williams, Joe Goldberg & Margo Guryan added lyrics to some of TM's compositions - We See, Let's Cool One, Worry Later, Let's Call This, Nutty Also Jon Hendricks was enlisted to write lyrics. Neither of these projects came to fruition. Has anyone recorded these vocal versions in the last 50 years?

Just picked up "On the Beach" on vinyl the other day and am quite enjoying it. Definitely of its time, but enjoyable, like the missing link between Sun Ra and Earth, Wind and Fire. I think "On The Beach" is the same as the eponymous "Artistic Heritage Ensemble" (Zulu 004), but I may be wrong here? - On the Beach is one of the titles on this LP BTW Thanks for all of the info

Totally missed out on this Trema vol. 3 release Did not pay enough attention to it when this was released. So many Monk concerts came out around that time and the majority of them were plain reissues. That vol. 3 looks like the real thing! Trema was a label that was part of the Europe 1 radio station company. The Monk March 1965 concerts were organized by Europe 1! What are the titles on this disc? - are they the same as the above Laserlight issue?

This is what I have In 2002 Laserlight issued the "concerts" on 3 CD's -> were these duplicates of the Trema issues? 1. Double "box" containing 2CD's claiming to be the two March 6 concerts (CD 36150 - 17425/17426) Disc 1 (was this the 1st concert?) Evidence Blue Monk Four In One Sweet & Lovely Rhythm-A-Ning Epistrophy Disc 2 (was this the 2nd concert or is it actually part of the March 7 concert?) Single CD claiming to be the March 7 concert (CD 17250) Rhythm-A-Ning (Actually April 18, 1961) Body & Soul (Actually April 18, 1961) I Mean You (Actually April 18, 1961) April In Paris (Actually April 18, 1961) Well You Need'n't Bright Mississippi Epistrophy I've discussed this anomaly with Robin Kelley - he also has the "wrong" titles on his sessionography Also, the concerts are reviewed in the Jazz Hot Mag (#208 - March 65 - was referenced in Robin's recent Monk tome) -> I would have to pay 15 Euros to download a copy of this mag!! - anyone out there who can get access to this?

Not sure if this has been discussed before I have detected an anomaly in the March 6/7, 1965 Paris Olympia concerts, with the help of the HowardM online discography (http://www.howardm.net/tsmonk/tsmonk2.php) Four titles from the March 7 broadcast (Rhythm-a-ning, Body & Soul solo, I mean You & April In Paris solo) are the same as those from the April 18, 1961 Paris concert (Riverside release - in Riverside box set) I have listened to these titles from both sources & they appear audibly identical (timings are also close to identical - some applause has been removed from the Riverside releases). I presume these titles were accidentally broadcast with the later date & have subsequently been left as part of this concert in discographies. It therefore appears we only have three "genuine" titles from the 7th concert - Well You Needn't, Bright Mississippi & Epistrophy. Some discographies list these concerts as May 23, 1965. Also, some list the second 6th concert as the 7th. There appears to be general confusion re these releases. The Thelonious label CD/DVD release (9316) from the early 2000's includes these titles as part of the March 7th concert - seems that the anomaly is being perpetuated. Any comments?

There are three trumpet/flugelhorn players on this session Lee Morgan, Burt Collins, Joe Shepley Some discographies list LM as playing on Popi (Blue Note, Lord, Masayana Matsumura) while the Jazz Discography Project omits him from this track I presume it's only ever been released as the b side of the single? Even listening to the title to discern LM may be tricky due to the number of trumpet players present

This is a long shot but I thought I'd try here I recently found a copy of Woody Shaw's "Last Of the Line" 32 Jazz double CD - ordered via Amazon Unfortunately Disc one was actually Disc one of "Dark Journey", a compilation The dealer has refunded my & let me keep the uneven set. I was just wondering if anyone out there has a spare copy of disc 1 (its the Muse "Cassandrite" LP/CD + a title from a Joe Chambers LP) I'd be happy to pay $$ or trade.

Flurin I have to agree The Copenhagen concent is wonderful - just listened to it this weekend (downloaded it from your site) I thought that the Stockholm & Copenhagen concerts were going to be on the new Hat CD but then realised it is listed as Berlin/Stockholm (had another look at the Hat site) - why double up with the AA box?

Same here - the Ayler, Braxton (Willisau) & Taylor (Garden) have been on that list for at least 2 years
