Excellent!!!

That is great! Has he had his reel to reel tapes transferred?
-
Thanks, that's it except it does not have the post-event interviews. I missed part of that. Was listening to an interview about Hasaan.
-
Yes, please find out what you can. This stuff needs to be digitized and placed in archive. I may have to start my own damn jazz archive...

I watched most of it but had to stop around 9:45. Why the heck was the video taken down???

Did anyone ever contact the guys with the tapes so they could at least be transferred? Commercial release of a whole other issue, but get them preserved before they rot! And don't just hand a stack of tapes to Zev...

Is it audio only? I think that is what is confusing me.

Those last four are tempting. Is there a fee to get in or is it by donation?

Thanks! I will pass this on to her. Her name is Sarah and she is studying at Georgetown.

Is there a way to interview Corky? I know a student would would like to talk to her.

The (W) means wife/widow though. So they passed themselves off as the missus? Corky Hale the harpist? Is she still around? Asked on Facebook and I got this from August 1944: (193) Bobby Socks - YouTube

Dang, there are a couple of alternates.

There's a feature in Jazz Times on Basra and Steve Swallow gives his recollections. He also accuses Alfred Lion of stealing the publishing for Eiderdown.

Michael did not say which record it was. The main issue here, I think is that this is an LP which had been released at some point. There are many factors that would make an LP hard to find, and how 'good' the record is is rather a minor factor in the equation, IMHO. Is Kind Of Blue the best jazz record ever made, and that is why it is easy to find? Now unissued sessions or live tapes is another matter. But they were talking about a released session.

Did they ask Wayne if he was OK with them pulling a 'Turkish Women At The Bath' on him? It is not even a photo from the same era (see Pet Peeves thread). What they should have done instead of messing with the cover is try to find the bonus track, Remembrance. It still existed when Stuart Kremsky was the archivist. It is a piano solo.

Michael Cuscuna shared his personal recollections somewhere. This intrigued me: I mentioned to Bob that I had finally found one of the rare LPs on my want list and it was very disappointing. With a strong stare in my direction, he intoned, "you know, most rare records are rare for very good reason." I somewhat disagree with this statement. Discuss.

There is an incredible resource called RIPMjazz which has digital holdings of many jazz periodicals. Alas, it is only available to those with an academic affiliation to a university that subscribed to it. My understanding is that once the DC Jazz Archives are reopened, I can access it in person. Sounds like a great retirement project, if I can ever retire.

The music he is holding is the project in question, Iphigenia. I thought the Kennedy Center was at least partially funding it. Maybe not. I hope there is a livestream option...

Yes, they play a few excepts. LOVE what I am hearing. Can't wait until the Library of Congress reopens so I can go listen to that solo piano set in the Max Roach collection.- 103 replies

Hasaan Ibn Ali – Metaphysics: The Lost Atlantic Album

Great presentation. who else was there? I still don't understand something - the tape was in the Atlantic/Warner/Rhino vaults all along and was located in under two hours. So my questions: 1) Why was this reference acetate made at all? I always heard that Rahsaan Roland Kirk was trying to get it released. If so, then why would it be in the vaults of the very label that lost the original? The vaults are the FIRST place I would have looked for the original, and the LAST place I would have looked for the safety copy. 2) What other reference acetates of lost Atlantic sessions are sitting in the vaults, just waiting to be located in under two hours? I wonder if technical issues such as this were sometimes the reason dates were not issued. Maybe Alfred annotated the logs with this type of info, maybe not. If there was tension in the studio because the veterans were trying to put the newbie in his place, Alfred might well have held back the session because of that. He would have been present to witness it, but I was not of course. The only session for which we know why it was not issued is Redd's Blues. Freddie and Alfred had a big fight in the studio, partially as a result of the last minute addition of Benny Bailey without proper rehearsal time. Freddie is the source of information for this.

Remind me where the backup tape was actually sitting? I understand its existence, I just don't know where it was all these years.- 103 replies
