Symphony in C is another Igor piece I absolutely *love*, but have never heard a live performance of. What's the story (if any), of its lack of being programmed much, if ever -- ??

I've thought about getting Carter Jefferson/The Rise Of Atlantis for eons. Somebody convince me the time is right. I've never heard it, but I think Hino is on it, iirc (and Woody Shaw produced it, right?). Maybe finally.

If you ever get around to Next Gen, it doesn't really hit its stride until the 3rd season. Most of season #1 (Next Gen) is downright aweful, and so is nearly half of Season #2 (again, Next Gen). Riker grew the beard between S's 2 and 3, so the quick rule of thumb is to ignore anything with clean-shaven Riker. Also, Jim, how in the hell did you make it this far without having ever seen even one original series episode? Really, how?

Freddie Hubbard solo on Lost Dreams (liquid love 1975)
Rooster_Ties replied to l p's topic in Recommendations
Yup, first two names I thought of too - Eddie Henderson (his first two leader-dates on Capricorn are fantastic, and collected on one CD), and Hino. Would love to know if anyone else was playing quite like this specifically in the 70's (I realize there have been others more recently, in the last 20-25 years). -
I have both as Japanese reissues on CD (my copies are at work, or I'd cite when they were issued), they I've had them at least 6 years, iirc. There's also one (just one?) similar trio date under Ron Carter's name - which is a 3rd title by this same trio well worth getting (my copy's also at work). Are those the only three titles with/by Herbie+Ron+Tony? Or are there any others? Thanks!

My sole MacMillan disc is a BIS recording of his trumpet and clarinet concerti. Will give a listen soon (haven't spun it in recent memory), and report back here.

Billy Harper 1964
Rooster_Ties replied to JSngry's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Any other notable early recordings of Harper? Not just underground, but legit released stuff? When/how did he hook up with Gil Evans? Or Art Blakey, for that matter. I have a good smattering of what I think is relatively early Harper, but am realizing just how little I know about his emergence on the scene early on. The AMG suggests his Gil Evans recordings might be his earliest commercial sessions, is that correct? Or is there anything else around that same time that's not as widely known? -
Billy Harper 1964
Rooster_Ties replied to JSngry's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
What were Billy's earliest debut recordings as sideman? Those two grey-market (semi-legit?) live dates with the Jazz Messengers are from '68 iirc, but what (if anything) was recorded earlier? -
Pretty sure I saw him with Sun Ra too, back in 1990 (at the Cubby Bear in Chicago).

I got 24/30 -- and not at all to my surprise, my wife got 29/30. Yay Mrs. Rooster!! (She reads way more books about history than I ever have.)

What live theatre did you see recently?
Rooster_Ties replied to David Ayers's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Last live theatre production I saw was Evita at The Kennedy Center here in DC in October. Fond memories of seeing it as a kid when it first toured, circa 1980 (when I was 11 or 12). -
"Uncompromising Expressions" - the Blue Note book
Rooster_Ties replied to felser's topic in Recommendations
Is there much mention of any 60's names like Andrew Hill, Grachan Moncur, Sam Rivers, etc? I remember a number of less well-known BN guys, to say nothing of the likes of Tyrone Washington and Eddie Gale, etc... -- getting short shrift in the Cook book. -
How Good Is Your Grammar?
Rooster_Ties replied to Scott Dolan's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
14/15, and the only one I guessed at was the very last one. No idea which one I got wrong, unfortunately. -
I really like Nathan Davis' clean sound on soprano, which almost sounds as much like a slightly darker clarinet as anything.

Bach Rewrite - Fender Rhodes & String Orchestra!
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in New Releases
Think I'm finally going to get this soon. Anyone else ever pick it up? Edit: still not on the US Amazon site? Dang! (Had planned on tossing this on an upcoming Amazon order.) Anyone got a US source? Thanks in advance!! -
THEO - my new progressive rock project
Rooster_Ties replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Got my Theo disc a couple days ago, and have spun it twice. Really good! Well worthy project, and a labor of love, clearly. Great job, Jim!! -

The Thad Jones is tempting. These are all CD, correct? -
New Heretical Statement re: Coltrane / Stitt
Rooster_Ties replied to Peter Friedman's topic in Artists
Well, the one thing I've said for years is that MILES is on fire on those later Swedish dates with Sonny. For that reason especially, I really like them more than the earlier dates (with Trane). I'm not always feelin' Trane with Miles live on those 1960's dates, but a lot of it is whether I'm in the right mood for that kind of Trane. -

How does something like this go un-"unearthed" for 45 years? -
Silver's studio work, great as it is, isn't very 'loose' (to put it mildly) -- so any live documentation of his best known POST-mid-60's lineups would be welcome. (Edit: meant to say post-mid-60's.)

Jackie McLean's 1960's Blue Note Recordings
Rooster_Ties replied to Tom 1960's topic in Recommendations
I wish, but no. I've heard told variously that the tapes are lost, and/or that the drummer on the date was sufficiently 'not good' enough to have soured the whole session (supposedly the reason Jackie never wanted it released).
