One of the greats but age gets us all. RIP. His time with Art Blakey was magical. Now they all belong to the ages.

The Times has been doing this series Five Minutes that will make you love this or that type of music where musicians and experts offer their suggestions. They did one on bop last year. Today’s edition is on jazz piano. Glaring omissions: Tatum, Ellington and Bud. The comments are observations on who was left out and make for interesting reading. 5 Minutes That Will Make You Love Jazz Piano Here’s the bop one. 5 Minutes That Will Make You Love Bebop “Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell: They altered the course of American music and raised the bar for improvisation. Listen to 10 experts’ favorites.”

That’s correct. On the second 1948 session of James Moody and His Bop Men (which on subsequent re-issues is renamed as James Moody’s Modernists; not sure why), Chano Pozo sings Tin Tin Deo.

I will probably be taking a dirt nap by then.

Times have changed. Prices are comparable to TPs and this seems their effort to grab some of that market.

Craft has announced that OJCs are back , at least in vinyl. They are not inexpensive ($39). “ORIGINAL JAZZ CLASSICS is back! The acclaimed reissue series — first launched in 1982 under Fantasy Records — released 850+ jazz albums over the course of three decades, making titles from legendary labels like Prestige, Riverside, Contemporary, Galaxy, and Jazzland more widely available to both seasoned jazz aficionados and new listeners. We’re thrilled to welcome the next era of OJC with a committed focus on audiophile-quality sound with two classic albums: Workin' With the Miles Davis Quintet and Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane, available April 28 and May 26, respectively. Both reissues have been cut from the original master tapes (AAA) by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio, pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI, and housed in a replica of their original tip-on jackets. Both titles will also be reissued digitally in 192/24 HD audio.” Original Jazz Classics

Without a doubt. Plus I love what Joel Dorn called the recording.

Have you heard this one, a 1981 performance at the Keystone with Richie Cole, John Handy, Cedar Walton, Bobby Hutcherson, Herbie Lewis and Billy Higgins. It’s darn good.

I read his All for Nothing a few years ago. They both touch on the subject of East Prussia, now part of Poland.

The Bishop set is available for pre-ordering as a cd.

Gearbox does do cd releases so maybe it will show up in cd eventually.

The latter it seems. There are a few people who listen to the music and are knowledgeable but they seem to be in the minority.

I find that very few of them talk about the music or if they do their comments aren’t very deep not to mention that it seems that most of them only listen to BN and nothing else.

A pairing of Ashby and Godard, from Vivra Sa Vie or My Life to Live. The song is Why Did You Leave Me from The Fantastic Jazz Harp of Dorothy Ashby.

And Eddie Buster too! Those guys were great on this.

Yes, this one. As far as I know it was reissued only that once. I used to have the record but can’t find it.
-
That would be a downer if he’s using it here.

The box seems like a strange mish mash of labels, some Concord (Prestige and Jazzland), Rhino (Atlantic) and UMG (Argo). I can only think they didn’t include more Argo/Cadet because some of those records are coming out from other companies, not to mention it would increase the cost. For example Verve and Third Man Records are re-issuing the Rubaiyat and Afro Harping is going to be included in a Cadet box set from VMP.
