  1. Get this set. Blue Mitchell - Junior Cook. One of the great, underrated front lines. This is a great set.
  2. I know that some present members had their foibles or problems but to go back and start picking this one or that one for what they did is not only a road you don't want to go down but one unlikely to happen. Who decides what the appropriate standards are. Anyway, there's an extreme difference between a person having a problem that in reality only affects themselves (alcoholism, drugs) and one that can affect the game itself. When you're betting on baseball, it's not that far away to taking actions that will affect a particular game you're playing that day. The BlackSox scandal almost ruined the sport. That is why gambling is the one thing you cannot do in the sport or any sport and why it's prominently posted in each clubhouse. It can affect the very essence, the fabric of the game, the public's belief that every game is played fairly and that every player is doing his utmost to help his team and not others. And that is why Pete Rose should not be allowed. He broke the one rule you're not supposed to break. He broke that rule and continued to lie about it. He shouldn't be allowed back into the game, let alone it's shrine, the Hall of Fame.
  3. Wasn't it b-3er who said a while ago "We don't no stinkin' BNBB!" Amen to that brother. This place beats it by a blue note
  4. His accomplishments are overshadowed by violating the one rule you're not supposed to break: don't bet. Don't let him in. From what I read in the last couple of days, his attempts to come clean are motivated by the 20 year rule. You're eligible to be voted in by the sportswriters for 20 years after you last played. Since he stopped playing in '86, that anniversary is not that far away. After that, it's up to the veterans committee, who are not known for their speed. After all, Gil Hodges still isn't in. Talk about an injustice
  5. I'm a no like Dan and Lon. Don't like 'em. Anti-NRA.
  6. I'd have to agree with Chuck on Swiss Nights. I prefer these somewhat more than the Nights at the Keystone. There's probably more interest in these, however, just because they've been so hard to get.
  7. In addition to Dan's information, his telephone number i s773-862-8573. BTW, the recent Dexter Gordon cd that they released a couple of months ago is quite nice. And they have a huge listing of Dexter cds.
  8. For those of you who may have missed this thread in the Reissues forum, this will be issued late this year.
  9. Great news indeed. I have two of the three but I'm sure they will all sound better as a Select. Something to look forward to.
  10. Another pro vote, especially for Billy Mitchell and Louis Smith. So, didya get it?
  11. It appears she loves Jim Sangrey too
  12. I didn't get the flu but I caught some sort of sinus infection which I think is gone but it's gone into my ears and left with me sort of ringing which I can't get rid of and is driving me nuts! It's hard to sleep and it's damn annoying. I'm seeing a hearing specialist next week. The general doctor thinks it will go away in time. God, I hope so. This holiday has been one royal pain.
  13. Berigan, this sounds like what happened to our cat Orange earlier this year. He was about 15 and it was very hard for him to go to the bathroom and it was a tough decision. I had sworn years ago that if they didn't put humans down, what gave me the right to make that decision. When Orange had trouble going, he wasn't in a lot of pain, but it just got worse and one day when he screamed in pain, my wife and I decided that why suffer more. He wasn't enjoying life. He couldn't go out anymore which he used to love to do. If it's not fun, why bother. When I took him to the vets and they asked if I wanted to be with him, I said I just wanted to remember him the way he was. I recently found a picture of him when he was himself. I had it blown up and framed and gave it to my wife for Christmas. She loved it. We have two more cats now, Scarr and James, both previously abandoned, and while they're both great with their own personality, there'll one be one Orange. My condolences (and I got misty eyed when I read your story). 2004 will be better.
  14. Received the Kenton Presents, the Curtis Amy Select and Duke Pearson Select, plust Bud at the Golden Circle, Volume 1. I've listened to part of Disc 1 of the Kenton Presents (Bob Cooper); really great. Better than I thought it might be.
  15. To be honest, for what these jewel case costs, it's not worth the effort. I just get a new jewel case and send the old one to recycling. One of the worst offenders of the sticky jewel case has to be Blue Note. I consider myself lucky if I get one good one out of a batch of RVGs.
  16. I would go with Jim's first comment although I'd have to say that seeing him on the Tonight Show when I was a kid didn't endear him to me. His approach strikes me as a me first kind of approach, the music be damned. When he gets into doing music as part of the band and doesn't try to show himself off, he's ok. However, I don't get that impression. A case in point for me is the recently reissued Buddy and Sweets. He's basically doing his thing and I didn't find it very enjoyable. I also don't see him and Bu as peas in a pod. Quite different approach and results for me. I realize you have to be a little bit of performer but I don't see that Art tries to make himself the thing.
  17. I received the Amy and the Pearson sets for Xmas and the Amy is a fantastic set. It's one of the better things I've heard out of Mosaic lately. I think the Blues Message and Meetin Here with Paul Bryant on organ are just top drawer but disc 2 that contains Groovin Blue and Way Down is simply fantastic. The variety of sessions that Bobby Hutcherson has played on never ceases to amaze me. Carmell Jones, enough said. This and the Carmell Jones are just great. Bring on more Pacific Jazz. Perhaps like Lon said a while ago, Duke Pearson is an acquired taste. I've listened to it a couple of times but it just doesn't grab me, at least not right now. So, I'll have to reserve judgment for awhile.
  18. I keep everything in the box (isn't that what they're for?) and, except for the Mosaics, which I keep in a separate area, if it's a box like a Select, I put in my with all the other cds, which I keep in alpha order.
  19. Hiroshi has emailed the following: The following CDs are scheduled for release. Frb.11,2004 Davis,Miles Birdland 1951 Toshiba TOCJ 66225(New) 2548 Feb.25,2004 Pieranunzi,Enrico Doorways Warner Music CPC8 5157(New) 2520 McCann,Les Jazz Legend Project Pony Canyon PCCY 30068(New) 2940
  20. On Christmas morning. My son wants to get to them right away, but it's great to here what they do in the Netherlands, Scandinavia and Iceland. When I was kid and lived in Uruguay, the big holiday was not Christmas (but still big) but the 6th of January (it was called 3 Kings Day, or epiphany), when you put your shoes out and presents were left.
  21. As you all know, I'm not big on the political forum but every member in my view here is important so happy holidays to Johnny and all. Without him and all of us, it wouldn't the place it is and to all those who may left, I hope that they rejoin us. Have a safe and happy one everyone
  22. Not more buzz about this movie? It's incredible. The only time I looked at my watch was when I ran to the bathroom. It was riveting. I don't mind telling you that I had a tear in my eye when Aragorn told the hobbits that they don't bow to anybody! I can't wait to see the The Two Towers extended version tomorrow. And if they really left an hour an hour of Return on the floor, that will be an incredible treat. These three movies are one of the great cinematic experiences ever. In the class of Lawrence for sure, for the panorama, the story, the majesty. One scene that grabbed was when Frodo put on the ring and Sauron's immediately turned to Mt. Doom. Amazing. While I loved this one, I still say my favorite is the Fellowship. I've watched it countless times and still love watching it.
  23. I thought it would actually be a lot later so March or sometime around that is quite exciting news.
  24. Well, I have little Brookmeyer so that looks good but not to sure about the Cooper. I have Blowin Country and it's a tad too tame for me.
  25. I'm curious to hear it too. Thanks for posting that. An album with a title like that has to be something to hear.
