Recently picked up "Curtis Fuller in New Orleans" on Progressive, which I'd never heard of. Looking forward to listening to it.

I'm smiling at the notion of going right up to the guy and asking "Are you Neal Hefti?" That certainly took a little bit of journalistic chutzpah!! Thanks for the story!

I agree with you, though there are nonetheless some nice moments on "Magic Touch." I think Tadd was trying to make some money with that one. I have to say Avid does a better job with these multiple album reissues than many other labels do. Meanwhile, some nice sound on this Japanese reissue:

To each his own. Always liked Wild Bill (he's wonderful on Ellington's New Orleans Suite). My favorites among the Verves were the albums with Earl Hines.

I love those Hodges 60s Verves. I used to bug Mosaic about doing a box, but the Andorrans stepped in and reissued them (sort of), so that screwed the pooch.

This is an odd one. It was later reissued (unchanged) on Moon. Sound is mediocre, but there's some fine Diz on it.

Paris Jazz Corner did well by me, but I'm glad to finally have this one. Listening to disc one.

This is an unusual case. Usually they announce a set for preorder a few months before it's due to come out. I'll be interested to see if this one does indeed start shipping in only five days!!

I'm just catching up on this thread, but I really love this image!! Only four tracks were recorded at that '51 session: "Howzit," "Nails," "Little Pony," and "Beaver Junction." Presumably issued on two 78s? Or was Columbia doing 45s by then? Columbia did reissue two of them ("Little Pony" and "Beaver Junction") on its "America's #1 Band" comp. gregmo

I just saw all five volumes at the Paris Jazz Corner a couple of days ago. Thought I'd alert anyone who might want them and could get there. Hours are a bit hinky in late August, but it is open. gregmo

Got this one on a trip to Europe. The original was issued on MGM in 1959, and I'd never even heard of it. Tracks are short but very sweet, and BG is in good form:

I was traveling and only heard the news today on the SeriusXM jazz station. Total shock. I figured--hoped?--he'd be with us a good while longer. RIP. gregmo
