  1. I just saw that! I have it in DVD, but will probably have to get the BluRay now. It's one of my favorite films.
  2. I used to be a huge Highsmith fan and read a lot of her books back in the 70s-80s. First became aware of her from Wim Wender's "American Friend" (based on Ripley's Game). I soon realized that a lot of the books repeated the plot lines of individuals getting caught up in some nefarious crime that they weren't able to get themselves out of.
  3. I definitely recommend Threadgill and Mingus!
  4. It's definitely one that I will need to read again (and again).
  5. Just finishing this. Hilarious!
  6. Erroll Garner "The Complete Concert By The Sea Live" $8.39 on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ZJ5QXDO
  7. This happens when you use a flash and set the shutter speed slower than the manufacturer's recommended "sync" speed. That's not really a shadow, but Dexter himself recorded on film a split second after the flash shut off.
  8. I saw him about 3 years ago at SFJAZZ as part of a show celebrating Gershwin. He was good and seemed healthy at the time.
  9. That's definitely Winwood's best album of the past few decades!
  10. Sounds like a radio-friendly song to me. I'll reserve judgment on the project until I hear the whole album, though.
  11. Anywhere You Want to Go
  12. Not sure if Bobby is or isn't playing these days. I last saw him scheduled to perform about a year ago at "The Addition" (the short-lived Yoshi's SF replacement), but it closed before that date. I know he's suffering from emphysema, and needs oxygen, but I haven't heard anything about him recently.
  13. There was a short review in the NY Times recently HERE
  14. I wasn't sure what he meant there. Just assumed he was including Grace.
  15. This is unbelievable! From Jorma, JA Guitarist : Goodnight Signe We were just checking into the hotel in Santa Monica this afternoon… I’ve got a solo gig at McCabe’s Music Shop tonight… I got a call from Grace who told me that Signe, the Airplane’s first female voice, passed on the same day as Paul. Signe was one of the strongest people I have ever met. She was our den mother in the early days of the Airplane… a voice of reason on more occasions than one… an important member of our dysfunctional little family. I always looked forward to seeing her when we played the Aladdin in Portland. She never complained and was always a joy. Flights of angels sing thee to thy rest sister… You will always live in my heart… Now we are four.
  16. "Blows" was credited to Paul Kantner/Jefferson Starship. I don't want to belabor this, though, as the later commercial edition that used that name WERE a very different animal. "Sunfighter" was credited to Paul/Grace, not the JS - my bad. Bark, Long John Silver and 30 Seconds Over Winterland all have their plusses and minuses with Bark being the most successful, IMO. But they were definitely on the way out and progressively more and more splintered. FWIW, I've been to Jorma's Fur Peace guitar camp in Ohio a couple of times. One of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. I've met Jack there, too - also nice, but more aloof.
  17. Sum of the parts - exactly! I was a BIG fan of the Airplane! Also the early Jefferson Starship albums that Paul, Grace and others release immediately after the JA broke up - notably "Blows Against the Empire" and "Sunfighter." "After Bathing At Baxters" is one of my all-time favorite rock albums of the period. RIP, Paul.
  18. Petty Live now $9.99 on Amazon. I ordered it.
  19. Obviously the rankings of ANYTHING as "best," "greatest" or 'whatever' is completely subjective. I rarely read or pay any attention to those lists for not other reason than I rarely agree with any of them. For that matter, my own personal 'best ofs' are constantly changing, anyway.
  20. I would love to hear more of Leon Thomas with the band.
  21. I'm a big fan of JdJ, too. You almost need to see him live to really appreciate his skill set and subtlety.
  22. I haven't heard him in a long time, but I liked some of his early stuff.
  23. This turned out to be just "meh," but entertaining enough for an hour. Wouldn't buy their albums.
