jeffcrom Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 I pre-ordered the Monk BN, and remember being annoyed when the release date was delayed. Don't know what my number was, because I sold it when the BN CD set came out. I probably wouldn't do the same now, but don't really regret it. Since then I have bought quite a few Mosaic sets, but I am by no means a completist. Quote

Larry Kart Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 Johnny Richards runs hot and cold for me. I think "Cuban Fire," "West Side Story" and "Rites of Diablo" are brilliant, but other stuff, like "Wide Range" and "Spanish Spoken Here" leave me cold. Did Johnny Richards do "Adventures in Time?" That is pretty good. Pete Rugolo is the one Kenton arranger who I find generally consistent throughout his catalog. But most of the other Kenton arrangers, including Johnny Richards, are not a blind buy for TTK. I've loved "Wide Range" from the time it came out, especially "Cimarron," which begins with an austerely noble melody and then shifts into an absolutely hellacious up tempo solo by Gene Quill. Also, that was just fine bunch of players, the trumpet and trombone sections in particular. The trombone section (Jimmy Cleveland, Frank Rehak, and Jim Dahl) went on to make a nice album with Quill and rhythm, "Three Bones and a Quill." Another Richards album not to be missed is "Something Else," with a fierce west coast band whose trumpet section included Maynard Ferguson, Buddy Childers, and Pete Candoli. Yikes. Stu Williamson and Shorty Rogers came along for the ride. Nice solo work from Richie Kamuca and Charlie Mariano. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHaYRDsEyeE Quote
Clunky Posted October 30, 2013 Report Posted October 30, 2013 A reviewer in The Wire of Sun Ra's DIW release "Live at the Pitt Inn" suggested Ra's piano style to be like that of Herbie Nichols. I liked Sonny's piano style so ordered the Nichols as my first set ( in 1992). Too many black boxes now, I dare not count them.. Quote
Tom in RI Posted October 30, 2013 Report Posted October 30, 2013 (edited) I pre-ordered the Monk BN set, I have #0067. Mosaic had sent a notice offering to refund the money because the 1st set was delayed. I can't find that letter or the response that Cuscuna sent when I replied that I didn't want to cancel and was looking forward to future releases (all communications were snail mail then). The set did come with an errata sheet and a 2 page letter thanking customers for their patience which I keep with the records.I also ordered and have on my wall two of the three posters they offered, I passed on the Blakey, what was I thinking? Ed S Posted October 31, 2013 Report Posted October 31, 2013 Back in the later half of the 90s I was working late into the evening on a computer system installation project for our hospital pharmacy. This was before I even started posting on the Blue Note Board. I happened to be playing some Blue Note CDs in my office and had to call the analyst for the company whose software we were installing. He heard my music in the background and it turns out he was a jazz fan. He started talking about the Jackie McLean set he had just purchased from a company called Mosaic. I'd never heard of them before - so he sent me a catalog. I followed his recommendation and picked up the McLean Quote

My first Mosaic order in '92 or '93 consisted of 3 sets - Basie Roulette Live; Kenton -The Holman/Russo charts & the Tina Brooks set (on vinyl). Not bad for the first order. brownie Posted October 31, 2013 Report Posted October 31, 2013 Mine too... The booklet carries the original Mosaic adress at Ocean Avenue, Santa Monica, Cal. Quote
relyles Posted October 31, 2013 Report Posted October 31, 2013 My first Mosaic was in late '87 or early '88 while still in college. I am pretty sure it was the Mingus Candid set because I remember that my then girlfriend (now wife of 19 years) threatened to cut the box one day when she was justifiably angry with me. Quote

erwbol Posted October 31, 2013 Report Posted October 31, 2013 Ah! Let's see. Did any of the old timers 'remember' a different title and story this time? That would be amusing. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted October 31, 2013 Report Posted October 31, 2013 I remembered right, at least that it was the Cherry BN - but I was off by a couple months as to when I'd bought it. I've since sold my Cherry set, and couldn't look up the receipt (which I think I'd included with the set when I sold it). Didn't post the info here in this thread again, but was pretty sure the McLean and Hill BN sets were my #2 and #3 in that order (and I was right!). Quote
king ubu Posted November 1, 2013 Report Posted November 1, 2013 ooooh, and what was that drawing board story again? still hurts me thinking of it! Quote
RiRiIII Posted November 8, 2013 Report Posted November 8, 2013 My first set was the Duke Reprise one. I have around 40 sets since then. Quote
