Has anyone called to preorder this??? I tried and they wouldn't take my money....  Said they needed to wait a few weeks to get a more solid release date.... <_<
-
I thought the Okeh set went up to 1929????
-
Can't wait on this one..  Wonder if any of this stuff contains live performances (which hopefully would exceed the 3 min barrier).... Anybody know????

I've noticed they have several major artists in this series... What is the story with this series???
-
Okay I guess I should venture into this one.... Hard to choose... But the Village Vanguard box, Blood On the Fields and the new JALC Vitoria Suite come to mind... Just replaying the Symphony Swing show on PBS and that's very good....

Live From Lincoln Center 2010 / PBS
tranemonk replied to Man with the Golden Arm's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I caught the last ten minutes online but have it on the DVR... Will watch this weekend. (I predict within 5 posts this will generate into another Wynton bashing thread.... which gets really tiring... ) -
Count me in... The only time I buy their stuff is when I'm sure (as sure as possible) that what I want is OOP in the original format/label...

It really is a great read. One of the very interesting parts is the juxtaposition of Ellington and the mainstream civil rights movement. I think he (Cohen) handles this part very well. After reading it I became particularly interested in the political role Ellington chose to play in WWII (vis-a-vis) the Treasury Shows...

How would you describe "Sidewinder"--i.e. what genre of jazz i

I thought it was considered the first of the "soul-jazz" songs (before they termed it as such).... Whatever it is called... Damn good song! -
Lester Young/Basie Set Selling Well
tranemonk replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The interesting thing for me.. I was kept putting off buying this one due to its relatively inexpensiveness and the fact that it was released two years ago. I don't recall a Mosaic selling this quickly... So I'm very glad I got off the fence... -
I usually don't get into this kind of stuff... but I just received my set.. and it's numbered 4243 of 5000! This is a relatively new set...2008! I have no basis for this but this seems to be selling VERY well... So if you're on the fence...  Grab it while you can.. I think this one is clearly going to sell out soon... I'm a happy puppy....

I'm listening to this now... I'm thoroughly digging it... :excited: :excited: Have to say.. not sure how Disc 2 plays out.. but as of right now.. this one's making my Top 10 of 2010...!!!! :excl: :excl:

I had the pleasure of seeing perform live Elvin 4 or 5 times... A gentleman who always had a great band! He is sorely missed.

Congratulations Man... Must have been a great day!

I completely concur.. One of my top 3 or 5....

New Teddy Wilson Box from Storyville
tranemonk replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The thing I like about these Storyville sets is like the Tatum,Duke and Webster boxes... A) they are relatively inexpensive (circa 60-80$ or so). B) they tend to have a lot of live dates C) a lot of the material is European dates which often only show up here (US) as expensive imports. I don't like the packaging... but it's often a lot of good, OOP music that's hard to get for a great price...Given the lack of specifics on the Wilson I don't know how much of this will apply... -
Just up! http://www.storyvillerecords.com/Default.aspx I've got no Wilson... What say you vets???? Is this likely to be a good one?????

Entire male Marsalis family among 2011 NEA Jazz Masters
tranemonk replied to Larry Kart's topic in Miscellaneous Music
One of the things I find so obnoxious about discussions about Wynton is that there's WAY too many dismissive opinions... It's just not worth trying to have a rational conversation. -
Entire male Marsalis family among 2011 NEA Jazz Masters
tranemonk replied to Larry Kart's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I'm not sure I agree with Phil Woods.... and obviously I could live without the shots @ the Marsalises' Let me ask a simple question... If they had named the Jones' family (e.g., Elvin, Thad and Hank) posthumously would those of you who are against be as upset????? <_< I don't think a "bad precedent" has been set... There have numerous great jazz families.... -
That's right.. thanks I forgot... It is frustrating though that there's no KIND of friggin' communication that these things are coming out on mp3.. You would think (given how much they all want our $$$) that there would be somebody who'd ask (pay) Mosaic for a list of their customers so they could send us some promotional emails or something.... (Not that I want more email...  ) My basic point is that there is CLEARLY a market (namely us) for this stuff... Seems like a half-assed effort to just throw them out there an have us go find them... What am I?? A dog after a bone???? :beee:

This is very odd... but the album info makes NO reference to Mosaic

I ordered this a LONG time ago since I only had the original release (no alternates or bonus cuts). They did this kind of packaging with Brubeck's Time Out. I liked this new one.. I think it was down to $19.99 at amazon a few days ago...

I have (although it's been a few years..). I like his music a lot and his live performances do have a hip trane like aspect to it... Although I would definitely NOT put it in the muzak category.... He's headed back over here in late January and I'll be going... IMHO there's a serenity in his playing (live and on record)... that I don't find in most performers....
