  1. I can't get to the link. In a nutshell, what does he say about Wayne? Bertrand.
  2. This is indeed Wayne's band+Hamilton (and Tabackin and maybe others?). What piece are they actually playing? I don't recognize it and the head is missing. It might be a Wayne piece from that period. There's also a clip of this band (same festival?) with Clark Terry guesting on 'The Three Marias'. Clark doesn't know the head, but does take a decent solo. It's too bad that when festivals plan these kind of meetings, they never think of what material to be played - just toss some superstars together on the stage and let 'em blow. Obviously, rehearsals would add to the cost, but perhaps they could have thrown in a bit extra for Wayne to write a part for Clark on the head - that might have been very interesting. Wayne played 'Over Shadow Hill Way' and 'Footprints' for the 1997 Monk Competition TV Gala. He had (IIRC) Scofield, Jim Beard, Patitucci, Carrington and Moreira PLUS a trumpet of section of Brecker, Faddis and Diego Urcola (the second-place winner). Obviously, Wayne had written an arrangement of the first piece for this configuration. If you saw the TV show and thought they didn't pull it off, I can tell you that I saw them play the piece about 12 times in rehearsals and some of the 'takes' (unrecorded, I'm sure) were just mind-blowing. I'm sure this arrangement (with three trumpets) evolved into the orchestral arrangement of this piece that Wayne does when he has the orchestra gigs. Bertrand.

    Archie Shepp

Speaking of Shepp, does anyone know how to contact him? Thanks, Bertrand. PS: His website has a phone number - I'll try that first.
  4. Are you anywhere in France from 8/8 to 8/23? Bertrand.
  5. I concur with posts #33 and #34. The Hutcherson/Land quintet is one of the greatest small jazz groups ever. There's also a live date on JMY which is amazing, and some 'private shows' as well which I believe come from that site that can't be named. All great stuff. Bertrand.
  6. Thanks to everyone for their kind wishes! You know you're buying too many CDs from Borders' when they send you a birthday e-mail with a coupon for a free pastry! Bertrand.
  7. If it is Stuart Kremsky they are firing, they are idiots. Bertrand.
  8. I'm sure Jim will remove this ASAP - just give us enough time to bookmark the page
  9. Alan would get a chuckle out of it, from the little bit I know about him. Bertrand.
  10. Happy birthday to my man in LA! I had a great time hanging out with you last year, and I hope to be in LA again next Spring. Have a great day! Bertrand.
  11. Wayne on Witch Doctor. Bertrand.
  12. You have sold me. I will try to find a 'hardcopy' at one or two places (any leads?), if not, I'll get it from iTunes. Bertrand.
  13. According to the Wash. Post, it was Rick Germanson. Bertrand.
  14. If the keyboard player looked like Jerry Lee Lewis, then it was Kikoski. Bertrand.
  15. I believe this Impulse! CD is long OOP - there's one last place I can check. I don't really know Brown's music but I noticed two things: 1) Grachan Moncur III is on it 2) iTunes is selling it for $5.99, which seems reasonable considering there's no artwork etc. How is this record? Does Grachan solo a lot? I'm very tempted. Thanks, Bertrand.
  16. Thanks for the update - I added the Tolliver. How's the Steve Kuhn? After a moment of reflection (there is no scientific instrument precise enough to measure this brief amount of time), I've decided to pass on the Marsalis Bertrand.
  17. I'm sure you thought of this, but watch out for rabies... Bertrand.
  18. Why don't we all pool our money together, and the whole organissimo forum can buy Blue Note as a cooperative venture? How much would that be a person? I bet chewy's lawyer dad could kick in some serious moolah. Our first two reissues: the Tyrone Washington trainwreck, and Wayne Shorter unissued 10/13/70. The covers are already ready (see other thread). Should we keep Cuscuna and RVG on the payroll? Let's have a shareholders' meeting in the bahamas sometime soon. Bertrand.
  19. Wayne will be in the U.K. on 8/5. Ckeck out imnworld.com. They are not as good at keeping this up to date as they used to be, hence this thread! Bertrand.
  20. Brownie, Thanks. I saw that on Danilo's site a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, my summer vacation dates are dictated by my son's school schedule, so I have to be back in the U.S. on 8/25. This also means paying the highest plane fares. Yikes! they have skyrocketed. I am trying to book in the next few days for August; I plan to start a thread to get help looking for cheaper flights! Bertrand.
  21. I believe all the Joel Dorn Left Bank stuff is hard to find now. I came across a copy of Hubbard's Fastball the other day. I had never gotten this because I usually find Left Bank stuff really lacking in sound (for whatever reason, they prided themselves on using cheap equipment). The Ken Dryden review from AMG does point out he sound deficiencies as well. So my question is: is this listenable at all, or quite horrid? I suspect the playing is great, but I have so many fucking CDs I'm thinking of passing on this one. Thanks, Bertrand.

    Hugh Brodie

If you do go, could you try to get some contact info? I would like to get in touch with him concerning Cal Massey. I didn't even know he was still 'on the scene'. Thanks! Bertrand.
  23. The myth of 5/25 was an error created by Leonard Feather, IIRC, and then propagated, perhaps by Feather himself. I believe it's 5/26 - I think Miles even addresses this in the beginning of his autobiography (not that that's a particularly reliable source). Bertrand.
  24. Theoretically, you could skip the pants and the underwear.
