Interesting - Walker teaches in Fayetteville NC, which is Tina’s home town. Wonder whether there is a connection?

I bought the Montreal vinyl on Record Store Day, spun it and thought "not bad" then promptly forgot about it. I then bought the box, which includes the Montreal set as Disc 3. The studio stuff is not bad, a few tunes are pretty interesting and the equal if not better than the material on the studio albums. But I am telling you folks, after listening more extensively through the convenience of digital (yes, there is that), I have to say that the Montreal set is a damn fine record. As I told my son, not sure if this is funk, jazz, rock or the blues. Really just Miles doing his thing. He sounds pretty good on mostly open trumpet (yes) and Scofield rocks the house. Bill Evans is pretty nice too. In many respects (not all), this is something of a commercialized extension of what he was doing in the mid 1970s. Something of. And the band is freaking tight, this blows away the contemporaneous studio album, Star People, which to my ears is the best of the (studio) batch. Worth checking out. Sony needs to release this as a single CD.

Which Jazz box set are you grooving to right now?

Oh that’s a good one - received for my 50th birthday! -
Mosaic to release 1960s Freddie Hubbard set
Eric replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Sorry, that was an attempt at humor, no booklet, so of course booklet no. 1 😎 Sorry for the the mis-information. Attempt at humor. They are sending me a booklet, the set was shipped without one. -
Mosaic to release 1960s Freddie Hubbard set

Received mine sans booklet. No. 1/5000. -
That is a good deal. Their shipping (days) is pretty decent, within a week door to door.

Oh yes, forgot about that. It must be very difficult to compete with Prime, easier for me to go there versus Dusty or Acoustic Sounds. Like to support the Bastards™ though!

Wow, cheaper at Dusty (for now). I get that CD Japan has deeper stock and thus likely a better fill rate than Dusty. But I have used that "Send Arrival Notice" with pretty good success, no less than 75% availability. Their pricing is decent and you don't have the shipping from Japan. Having said that, I do frequent the Japanese Bastards™ fairly regularly. Shipping seems reasonable and is pretty fast.

Mosaic to release 1960s Freddie Hubbard set

Yeah, I receive their Jazz Gazette email and they mentioned it is shipping this week. I bought a bunch of these in the early 80s in either the “white note” or “black note” configuration. Sound - due to the quality of my turntable most likely - was sometimes sketchy, but I really grew to enjoy these records. Liked the tunes, liked the sidemen and I enjoy the sound of his playing. I agree he had some wonderful contemporaneous sideman dates, but those don’t diminish his BN leader dates. I do have the Artistry Of on an original Impulse lp (something you might find used in the early 80s) and really dig that one - maybe more so than the BNs. I find it amazing they are still in business. As mentioned, they have curiously passed on the vinyl revival and it’s not like libraries are buying copies anymore. Still wish they had the stones to do something like the Bill Barron set or tap into more obscure modern jazz. Probably too late for them to turn the vinyl spigot back on, although I would think it would drive sales. -

Same here. I took that to mean, yes, shipping will be soon. Step one, acknowledge the order, step two, fulfill. But they could have been more clear. -
Remembering Creed Taylor

Was just listening to that in the car yesterday! -
Wes Montgomery - Small Group Recordings Kind Of Blue Rooster - I like those cassettes! Felser - I also had Lighthouse early on, along with The Procrastinator. Hard to find anything else by Lee in those days (early 80s). Arounf that time I found the 101 Best Jazz Albums book by Len Lyons to be indispensable.

I am a fan of Skagly, despite the somewhat offensive album title and and cover photo. Good playing, pretty decent tunes. I prefer it to High Energy. -

Although I have all of this, I will get it for the aforementioned reasons - booklet, sound quality. Glad to see the are including the two Impulse lps - I have always loved The Artistry and the inclusion of John Gilmore is a nice touch. Something about this one seems apart from the Blue Notes - can’t place it really. Glad they are leaving out the live sides - what a disappointment they are, particularly in view of the players. -
Yeah that was similar to my experience at that Tower - maybe early 90s?. Almost all CDs at the time and I was on the hunt for Japanese imports - with a focus on Blue Notes. I remember simply being floored by the number of titles they had - things I had only read about on the backs of jackets or printed inner sleeves - or had never seen at all. Yes, I preferred the one in the Village, but Lincoln Center was good too. I think I still dream about those places I also remember seeing Pete Townshend in there once, just browsing the racks.

Thanks everyone and enthusiasm for Jazz Record Center in particular. I have been there before, but was a long, long time ago.
-
Howdy all - I am travel to New York tomorrow and looking for record store recommendations. I will mostly have time in the Village while the wife/kids are hitting book stores. Really dating myself, really, but find myself a little lost since the demise of Tower Records 😎

Many years ago I became friends with a guy who "loved jazz" and our tastes seemed to intersect. I soon discovered he was one of those audiophile dudes who constantly wanted to "A/B" new to old versions of CDs (pre-vinyl craze). Although I am not immune to "upgrading" because something "sounds better" (maybe/sometimes), the A/B thing was definitely not for me. I have also nosed around the Hoffman board and find some of those discussions depressing. Nasty, snarky and pretty self-absorbed. And endless. Hundreds of pages of getting the last word in Maybe coming of age in the 70s, with cassettes 8-tracks and Radio Shack stereos, has made me easy to please, but I have found I can assemble an amazing system for a couple thousand bucks.

I enjoyed listening to both Joe and his playing afterward. Sounds like a thoughtful gentleman.

I love the little Wallen Bink label and bought all three of these. Yes, somewhat expensive, particularly with postage to the US. But they really are beautiful packages and something I can savor for years to come. Gave up the booze, gave up sugar, but I ain't giving up delights like this https://wallenbink.com/index.php/shop/erich-kleinshuster-6tet-orf-recordings/erich-kleinschuster-6tet-orf-wb014-015-016

I like the idea of the mono LP with the booklet. Apparently not the config they are selling. I saw parts of a video where Blue Note said they are pressing "shitloads" of copies, so I can afford to wait around. BTW - any opinions on the SHM-SACD option - more on the format in general versus the specifics of this issue?
-
Agree wholeheartedly on the packaging/graphics of 32 Jazz. Of course it IS the only way I actually own The Almoravid, weird plastic spine and all.

Thanks Lon. The booklet is drawing my attention to the stereo vinyl ... which prompted my question.
