Ken Peplowski plays Free Jazz - That's Right - Innuendo in Blue
Eric replied to AllenLowe's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Based on your recommendation, I bought this. It is delightful! -
Is it one of these? I have one of them, but can’t recall which. https://www.discogs.com/artist/671067-The-Jazz-Networks I was conducting the same exercise as you.

THIRD MAN RECORDS TO RELAUNCH VERVE BY REQUEST AS VINYL REISSUE SERIES
Eric replied to mjzee's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Agree. All of them have some major element of yellow tint. Don't care much for the Roy Brooks either. -
So I have been aware of him since the 80s, but never took the plunge. Any recommended starting points, or is he more of a sideman? Thanks!

I snagged one. Let me know if anybody needs it, I have a backup. Carmell Jones, Bobby Watson, Nathan Davis, all Kansas City guys.

On The Corner is not perfect - it can be repetitive and a bit clunky. BUT, I find it to be a fun, fascinating listen. Great headphones album. This was not some poppy sell-out record. I am a huge fan of Remain In Light by the Talking Heads and find some similarities - they both have this dense mix of underbrush that is a blast to listen to.

Yes, that one is stellar, need to revisit soon!

Huge fan over the past 40 years, but zero interest in this. I have a fondness for the “best of” Human Touch and Lucky Town. For me, much more enjoyable than Born in the USA, which I think is pretty weak. Magic is pretty good and the aforementioned Girls In Their Summer Clothes is a favorite for me too. Edit: I do not get Western Stars at all either. It is sacred at the other board, but then ...

Fortunately Bandcamp gives you a good chance to audition!

Interesting - Walker teaches in Fayetteville NC, which is Tina’s home town. Wonder whether there is a connection?

I bought the Montreal vinyl on Record Store Day, spun it and thought "not bad" then promptly forgot about it. I then bought the box, which includes the Montreal set as Disc 3. The studio stuff is not bad, a few tunes are pretty interesting and the equal if not better than the material on the studio albums. But I am telling you folks, after listening more extensively through the convenience of digital (yes, there is that), I have to say that the Montreal set is a damn fine record. As I told my son, not sure if this is funk, jazz, rock or the blues. Really just Miles doing his thing. He sounds pretty good on mostly open trumpet (yes) and Scofield rocks the house. Bill Evans is pretty nice too. In many respects (not all), this is something of a commercialized extension of what he was doing in the mid 1970s. Something of. And the band is freaking tight, this blows away the contemporaneous studio album, Star People, which to my ears is the best of the (studio) batch. Worth checking out. Sony needs to release this as a single CD.

Oh that’s a good one - received for my 50th birthday! -
Mosaic to release 1960s Freddie Hubbard set
Eric replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Sorry, that was an attempt at humor, no booklet, so of course booklet no. 1 😎 Sorry for the the mis-information. Attempt at humor. They are sending me a booklet, the set was shipped without one. -
Mosaic to release 1960s Freddie Hubbard set
Eric replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Received mine sans booklet. No. 1/5000. -
That is a good deal. Their shipping (days) is pretty decent, within a week door to door.
-
Oh yes, forgot about that. It must be very difficult to compete with Prime, easier for me to go there versus Dusty or Acoustic Sounds. Like to support the Bastards™ though!
-
Wow, cheaper at Dusty (for now). I get that CD Japan has deeper stock and thus likely a better fill rate than Dusty. But I have used that "Send Arrival Notice" with pretty good success, no less than 75% availability. Their pricing is decent and you don't have the shipping from Japan. Having said that, I do frequent the Japanese Bastards™ fairly regularly. Shipping seems reasonable and is pretty fast.

Mosaic to release 1960s Freddie Hubbard set
Eric replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Yeah, I receive their Jazz Gazette email and they mentioned it is shipping this week. I bought a bunch of these in the early 80s in either the “white note” or “black note” configuration. Sound - due to the quality of my turntable most likely - was sometimes sketchy, but I really grew to enjoy these records. Liked the tunes, liked the sidemen and I enjoy the sound of his playing. I agree he had some wonderful contemporaneous sideman dates, but those don’t diminish his BN leader dates. I do have the Artistry Of on an original Impulse lp (something you might find used in the early 80s) and really dig that one - maybe more so than the BNs. I find it amazing they are still in business. As mentioned, they have curiously passed on the vinyl revival and it’s not like libraries are buying copies anymore. Still wish they had the stones to do something like the Bill Barron set or tap into more obscure modern jazz. Probably too late for them to turn the vinyl spigot back on, although I would think it would drive sales. -

Same here. I took that to mean, yes, shipping will be soon. Step one, acknowledge the order, step two, fulfill. But they could have been more clear.
