  1. The Grafton sax was very cheap to buy.
  2. Have a very happy birthday Jim
  3. Belated greetings David, hope had a good day.
  4. Thanks for all the above comments. I've not read the book m,ainly because of the poor reviews. Some friends loved it though. I'll be seeing the movie (my wife wants to go). Who knows I may even try the book.
  5. John - Was that the last Summer 1980 stint at Scotts with Marc Johnson and Joe LaBarbera? I caught 2 consecutive nights of that one. The early shows were packed out with the 'expense account' brigade and quite noisy but for the late shows there were no more than 12-15 congniscenti in the audience and he had everyone totally entranced. Unforgettable - and somehow (thank you Ronnie) I got a front row piano-side seat for the second evening. I can't be certain (my memory is a bit dim) but it was probably that occasion. Unfortunately I couldn't stay for the later sets. Thinking about Evans live I also saw him at Croydon where he was totally swamped by the drummer (Philly Joe?). So my experiences of Evans live haven't been that good.
  6. I recall the last time I saw Evans at Ronnie Scott's. He seemed rather introspective that evening but the audience was so noisy the music was hardly audible. Clearly not the best environment to listen.
  7. Whoops, forgot about the groans.
  8. The Chaloff and Jazz Crusaders arrived earlier this week. Highly recommended.
  9. I still have mine. Togther with the Roswell Rudd and Leroy Jenkins JCOAs. Maybe the Thornton is due for a play as it's probably not been out for a decade or more at least. In the circumstances they should probably be in my disposal pile.
  10. I'm very fond of Kikuchi's playing especially with the group 'Tethered Moon'. This trio comprises Gary Peacock and Paul Motian. It's all very minimal. There are four cds on Winter and Winter/JMT most of which are in print and easily obtainable. At least two other cds came out on Paddle Wheel as well as a Kikuchi trio with James Genus and Victor Jones. If you like Kikuchi then sample any of the Winter and Winter Tethered Moon titles.
  11. Arrived today Serge Chaloff; Boston Blow Up. Jazz Crusaders; Live At The Lighthouse.
  12. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOOTER!
  13. Enjoy the gig. Kofi has always impressed me when I've heard him play live.
  14. Why Lester? Because he gave me so much pleasure. Guaranteed to make the spine tingle at every live performance.
  15. This album was my introduction to the music of Sun Ra. Was it really forty years ago? There wasn't much else available by Sun Ra at the time, at least in the UK which made the music here even more astonishing. It certainly lived up to ESP Disk's line 'You Never Heard Such Souns In Your Life' The most striking thing is the emphasis on lower range instruments, bass trombone, bass clarinet, bass marimba, tympani, often used at the same time as piccolo and flute. The emphasis is on the ensemble as much as on solo work but the solos are all excellent, often growing out of the ensembles organically. Listening to the album today it is just as stunning as it was forty years ago. There is so much here that it's an easy choice for taking to the imaginary desert island. Original lp and current cd cover below
  16. Glad I have mine!
  17. Happy Birthday Jimmy. A rather under appreciated player?
  18. Very sad news, I can't help feeling shocked.
  19. The two Keystone Trio cds on Milestone are excellent. Highly recommended.
  20. I'd definitely agree with some of those.
  21. Sorry to come in a bit late on this one but my Audigy sound card has a "what U hear" option. Just select that and you have it.
  22. I'm not a big fan of jazz violin but the Dizzy Gillespie/Stuff Smith is pretty good.
