  1. Just been having another listen to the Beehive Box. Nothing earth-shattering in this set but on the whole it is a fascinating collection, really good overview of the state of US modern-mainstream circa 1980. Jordan's 'Hyde Park After Dark' currently on - some nice Von Freeman on that one and some rare late period Cy Touff.
  2. Unless there are no alternatives put in place - yes. Sad state of affairs but many of these festivals with ageing demographics are going the way of the Dodo, sadly. Hopefully Swanage council will sort something out, it is such a great venue. Simon Spillett had some interesting things to say about this last night - you need to model yourself on Glastonbury, put in some glamping and keep the 'J' word well under wraps to entice the younger crowd these days. The more dedicated 'real jazz' festivals have a real fight just to survive, especially when self funding. More Barnes, Abate, Clark Tracey et al today. Weather holding up great and flat calm sea to get some sunbathing in. Might even check out the Punch and Judy improv gig.
  3. Some really nice live music today. Alan Barnes' Octet with his 'A Fish Tale' poetry +jazz project (Grimsby fishing fleet themed - good stuff) plus another set with the Barnes/Gilad Atzmon Orient House Ensemble. Simon Spillett's trio plus a fine performance with Darius Brubeck's group featuring Dave O'Higgins.
  4. I just put the whiners on 'ignore'.
  5. Essential music and a fine set. Buy recommendation ! and ignore the Mosaic nay-sayers on the other thread.
  6. Glorious clear skies, flat calm sea and temperature in the 20s last night in Swanage, Dorset. Perfect English seaside conditions. With Jean Toussaint and his fine young band in the Marquee doing Jazz Messsengers tunes with great aplomb, who could ask for more. Just about to head off back..
  7. This thread has me thinking I need to dig my boxes of casettes out. I have a Sony Miles Davis 'Pangaea' amongst other things, as well as some BBC jazz programmes recorded off of FM radio back in the 1970s. That stuff would be worth transferring. I still have one (gathering dust). It runs off of North American mains though and needs a step-down transformer.
  8. K-Tel ! First time I have ever seen an Oliver Lake casette. Or Denny Zeitlin for that matter. Nice !
  9. I have had a couple of email queries to Scott in the last few weeks and he has answered promptly and very helpfully. Can the 'critics' kindly wind their damn necks in and give the man some respect !
  10. If that concert was recorded at the Westin Hotel, the ballroom is of a fair size and would have held a good sized audience. Recall seeing a sell-out John McLaughlin gig there.
  11. Dusk Fire CD. A miracle that this one even exists !
  12. I think I got it for £8 !
  13. I remember him appearing at the Toronto Jazz Festival nearly 30 years ago now. He came over from Detroit for the Fest. Sadly, didn't get around to seeing it. Great to hear that he's still playing !
  14. Shocking and tragic news. Huge talent, remember seeing her play around 20 years ago. RIP.
  15. Cripes - I was downright sure I had this one but checked my racks and turns out I haven't. I must have been confusing it with the Stan Getz set. Can't even get a grip on what I have and what I haven't. One more to add to the list..
  16. Pearl Carr Teddy Johnson Boris Rose
  17. What's with the Batman post-it on the LHS? Adam West autograph?
  18. Bl**dy great ! Better than Glastonbury !
  19. Not to forget either that there are two new unissued Neil Ardley releases coming up on CD (sorry, wrong thread ). Must check out the 'Binker & Moses'.
  20. Recorded onto what sounds to be a crude C90 cassette but vital music.
