I regularly trade stuff in. After many, many years of buying LPs/CDs, I have a pretty good idea after 2-3 listenings whether or not I'm going to like something for the long-term. I'll also periodically go through my collection and weed out stuff that I haven't listened to for a LONG time and don't think is otherwise essential.

Question about Yoshi's at Jack London Square
BFrank replied to HolyStitt's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
That's a good question. I don't know. They usually clear out the room after each show and if the second show is not sold out, you can come back for no charge after the paying customers claim their seats. You should call them about that (they actually answer the phone). FWIW, there are very few bad seats in the house and no obstructions. The sound is excellent, too. -
Lots of great stuff here: Belden Video Network. Includes the GG/Burrell/Kessel jam called - "GG-KB-BK-London-69.m4v". You get to guess at who all the videos are by their initials - in most cases, pretty obvious.

Question about Yoshi's at Jack London Square
BFrank replied to HolyStitt's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
The way it works is - for an 8pm show, the doors open at 6pm. For a big-ish event like this you might want to get there before 6:00 and wait in line. When the doors open you are given a yellow tag and a hand stamp. You then go straight to the showroom and clip that tag on the seat(s) that you want. You are then free to leave and have dinner or whatever. In other words, you aren't stuck in the club for 2 hours waiting for the music. Yoshi's has pretty decent Japanese food in the adjacent dining room. If you're into that - you would need a reservation, but you're not obligated to eat there. Pretty good system. -
Great site! Don't miss out on Stan Getz' "La Fiesta" with Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke & Tony Williams! BTW, the "guitar stuff" that DatDere mentioned is a 'summit' with Kenny Burrell, Barney Kessell and Grant Green (filed as GG-KB-BK)

Recent Down Loads And Additions From E - Music

Yeah. That was ashame. They had all that great stuff up there for about a week and then.......gone. Oh, well ... -
Lon, if I could burn you a copy of my LP, I would. That late edition of JA always sounded bloated and sluggish to me without the charm of the earlier group. Barbata didn't have a light enough touch on drums and I never did "get" Papa John Creach (w/the Airplane, that is). I'm sure he was a fine musician, but for me it never worked. As for "Long John", same problem. I've still got the vinyl, though - including a second SEALED version. Well described by AMG: "When the LP hit store shelves in the summer of 1972, it became instantly notorious for the cover that transformed into a cigar (read: stash) box. The inner sleeve went as far as reproducing the image of tightly compressed domestic ganja, replete with sticks, seeds and stems."

He did a killer version of the title track at Yoshi's a couple of months back... my girlfriend was thrilled (even proclaimed, walking back to a late BART train, "I think I'm starting to get it!"--jazz, that is. This one may last...). I saw one of those shows, too. They were really ON that week.

Ever heard this Lp set? Flight Log-Jefferson Airplane It has some of those songs...from the side project bands. A nice little comp. "Flight Log" was an interesting collection at the time, but other than a live version of "Please Come Back" there's nothing new there. That "Fillmore East" album is pretty good. When I first got it, I thought it was too rough and sloppy. But the more I listened to it, it began to grow on me. I guess I was originally comparing it to "Bless It's Pointed Little Head".......which is incomparable. "30 Seconds ..." is hard to find? Hard to believe! It's not very good. Jefferson Airplane in its last throes.

Yes. Black Saint WAS the first Black Saint release. I would love to see Max Roach's 1977 album "The Loadstar" w/ Billy, Cecil Bridgewater & Reggie Workman released on CD (hel-looooooo Mosaic!). It's a killer album. Besides having it re-mastered, it would be great to have the each tune that comprises this 2 LP set (there are only 2) joined rather than divided over 2 sides of each disk.

This one happens to be quite spectacular, as well.

Let's see.......you don't like "Call of the Wild ..." (over 1/2 the album, time-wise) or the cowbell or Billy's "intense style", and you don't like the drumming. Doesn't leave much. Maybe you would be better off with Lee Morgan's final album. It has "Croquet Ballet" on it.

Recent Down Loads And Additions From E - Music

I'm on the "eMusic Plus w/20% Discount" annual plan. It's $140-something for a year's worth of 65 DLs/month. Plenty for me. While there are LOTS more albums I could download, I find that I don't listen enough to the ones I get. -

"Live in Tokyo" and the "Slugs" sets (plus additional cuts) comprise the Mosaic Select set. An excellent collection for anyone who likes Tolliver. -

jimmy rainey trio w/ sonny clark on Xanadu- 1954 recordings
BFrank replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Artists
FWIW, eMusic has 3 of Raney's Xanadu albums: Solo The Influence Live in Tokyo So, for $0.25 or less per song (depending on your plan), it's even cheaper than the CD. -
Recent Down Loads And Additions From E - Music

They just added Enemy Records, so now there are a bunch of albums by Sonny Sharrock, Elliot Sharp, Defunkt, James Chance, and Last Exit (w/Brotzmann, Sharrock, Laswell and Ronald Shannon Jackson). If you're into downtown NYC jazz/noise-rock, this is good stuff. -
Thanks. He's going to be playing at the SF Jazz Festival this Fall Season. I'll probably have to go.

The Loosdrecht set was issued on CD by Black Lion as "Grand Max" and has the same tracks as the 2-LP set. Can probably be found in the used bins. I don't think it's that rare. As for "Paper Man" - definitely a keeper. Worth it for "Household of Saud" alone! But it's a must-have with Gary Bartz, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Joe Chambers. A veritable super-group.
