tranemonk Posted June 4 Report Posted June 4 https://www.mosaicrecords.com/product/pharoah-sanders-theresa-records-limited-edition-box-set-282-7-cds/ Thoughts? Feelings? Must-have? Meh??? Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted June 4 Report Posted June 4 Not my favorite Sanders era. I won't be picking this one up. Quote
Mark Stryker Posted June 4 Report Posted June 4 (edited) I love Pharoah in this period, and there is a LOT of fantastic music here. Full disclosure: I wrote the notes for this set -- all 10,500 words of them -- and, modesty aside, I think they bring a depth of insight and analysis into Pharoah's music and clarity to his elusive biography that I hope brings new perspective to the discourse about him in general and sparks a reassessment of the Theresa recordings in particular. Carry on. Edited June 4 by Mark Stryker Quote
pglbook Posted June 4 Report Posted June 4 Wow, what a great surprise! I will definitely order it. It is also nice to see Mosaic branching out. Maybe my dream of a Sun Ra box set may not merely be a dream after all! Quote
jazzbo Posted June 4 Report Posted June 4 Looking forward to those notes Mark. I have about half or more of this already, but I pre-ordered--great music imo. Quote
romualdo Posted June 4 Report Posted June 4 Interested but unfamiliar with this period - Cook & Morton consistently give 3 stars to most of the Evidence CD releases over various editions Quote
T.D. Posted June 4 Report Posted June 4 Massive surprise. I honestly thought it was an April Fools-type hoax. Music-wise I'm thrilled. However, I've been downsizing and had sworn to purchase no more Mosaic sets since I can no longer abide their bulky format. So probably not. Quote
kh1958 Posted June 4 Report Posted June 4 It should be a great set but I already have almost all of the music. Quote
rostasi Posted June 4 Report Posted June 4 Definitely yes! When I worked at Kinnara, we picked up this label and tho my excitement was initially tempered by the less *anxious* sound I was used to when shaking my bedroom walls growing up, I not only became accustomed to his slightly less fearless sound, but I really liked his choice of musicians: Henderson, for instance, reminding me of an amalgam of Lonnie Liston Smith and Alice Coltrane's legato-style. It also nicely fulfills my desire to consolidate all of those Theresa albums that I have into a nicely produced box set. Looking forward to Mark's notes as well. Quote
Rabshakeh Posted June 4 Report Posted June 4 (edited) This is a very nice idea. Although we on the board probably don't see it so much, Pharaoh Sanders is now regarded by younger jazz and non-jazz listeners as occupying a place in the highest chambers of jazz royalty, along with Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Mingus etc. Despite that, these Theresa records are comparatively hard to find and will represent something new for those listeners, who are mostly versed only in his Impulse! and StrataEast periods. I really think that this is a smart idea for Mosaic and very judiciously chosen. Also, John Hicks! Edited June 4 by Rabshakeh Quote
rostasi Posted June 4 Report Posted June 4 (edited) I can easily see this showing up on The Wire's year-end "best of" reissues list for that very reason (younger folk). Edited June 4 by rostasi Quote
nighthawk68 Posted June 4 Report Posted June 4 I was happily surprised to see Mosaic putting this out. His Impulse albums are much better known of course, but these Theresa recordings are really strong. I will be ordering this. Quote
Dan Gould Posted June 4 Report Posted June 4 Considering that the only Sanders I ever kept was an Evidence CD from this era, this goes from a "never" to a "maybe" - if indeed he is more on the "inside" thru out, compared to his fire breathing days of yore. Will be interesting to see if indeed this is judiciously chosen as Mosaic has been more in the mainstream than Sanders is known for, yet this is closer to the mainstream than that earlier era. Quote
sidewinder Posted June 4 Report Posted June 4 (edited) A suprising but welcome announcement. I think I only have 'Journey To The One' on LPs so almost certain to go for this set, as it coincides with the period in which I saw Pharoah with his quartet with William Henderson. Only a matter of time now before Bill Barron announced, I guess. Edited June 4 by sidewinder Quote
Clunky Posted June 4 Report Posted June 4 I'm really tempted as I have none of this material and my opinion of Pharaoh has only increased over the years. As a UK resident it might the first set I get from Jazz Messengers ... Quote

Tempting to order direct as there is a $20 early bird discount. Edited June 4 by sidewinder Quote
ghost of miles Posted June 4 Report Posted June 4 Ordered. I don't have most of this music and would have gotten it anyway, but knowing that Mark wrote the notes made it all the easier to cough up my credit card number. Quote
felser Posted June 4 Report Posted June 4 I have all of it, I think all on Evidence CD's, feel no need to upgrade. I find ups and downs in these recordings (disclaimer: I also do in his Impulse albums), but do especially like the Live album. Quote

gmonahan Posted June 4 Report Posted June 4 Hmmmm. I'm not at all a fan of the Impulse! stuff or, frankly, of the 60s era avant garde at all, so, despite my urge to get every Mosaic set, I have to give this one a loooooong think. Quote
jazzbo Posted June 4 Report Posted June 4 I find this different from his Impulse material in a way that you would likely favor. Add that to your thinking mix! Quote
