Late Posted yesterday at 03:42 PM Report Posted yesterday at 03:42 PM There've been quite a few Mosaic sets containing recordings made in 1960 and later. While Mosaic's direction, with some notable exceptions, currently seems pointed toward pre-1960s recordings, what potential (and realistic) post-1960 sets would you like to see Mosaic release? Quote

clifford_thornton Posted yesterday at 05:24 PM Report Posted yesterday at 05:24 PM Bill Barron as a leader Bill Dixon as leader/producer for Savoy, or Savoy avant-garde in general George Russell in Europe (Saba, Concept, Flying Dutchman). Could include Soul Notes too but not sure if CAM would license those... Quote

Yes to both, particularly if the Barron set included Motivation, truly a hidden gem. It does seem, however, that Mosaic is predominantly interested in mining swing-era recordings from the 30s and 40s—though there's nothing wrong with that. The Pharoah Sanders set would be a notable exception. The last Hank Mobley and recent Bobby Hutcherson sets would also be exceptions. The demand for post-1960 recordings—or is it label and/or contractual red tape—might realistically prevent box sets from this era being produced. Not entirely sure, but I'm always a little surprised when a new Mosaic of swing-era recordings is released. I don't mean to complain though—any new Mosaic is just cause for celebration. Quote

colinmce Posted 21 hours ago Report Posted 21 hours ago The Bill Barron is a no-brainer Warne Marsh - anything! private tapes, full session recordings, unreleased live recordings. I'm sure there's an angle here in the vein of the recent Tristano set New Orleans Modern Jazz - something along the lines of a full reissue of the 1976 Opus box set New Orleans Heritage - Jazz: 1956-1966 (which features Ellis Marsalis/American Jazz Quintette recordings along with some others) expanded with contemporaneous and relevant music. This is maybe a little outside the scope of what Mosaic does, but I think there's some great potential Always thought Mosaic could do something more with some of the newer BN material a la the Don Pullen and Tony Williams Selects. I think a box of Jason Moran's BN sessions would be great. In that vein a box of Geri Allen's Minor Music dates, possibly incorporating the Somethin' Else/BN material as well, would be really strong. jazzbo Posted 21 hours ago Report Posted 21 hours ago I would love to see a Lateef Impulse box set, either studio or live and studio. Quote
gmonahan Posted 20 hours ago Report Posted 20 hours ago I'd like to see a "complete label" set of Lionel Hampton's "Who's Who in Jazz" label from the 70s. Mingus did his last bass work for that label, but I seem to remember that the Hampton estate can be "Goodman-like" to deal with. Quote

B. Clugston Posted 13 hours ago Report Posted 13 hours ago Amen to the Barron and the Bill Dixon-related Savoy albums. A George Russell set would be cool, too. Though the music straddles 1960, I'd love to see a Jimmy Giuffre Verve set. Anything by Mal Waldron. If there's any unreleased tunes or alternates, an Ahmad Jamal on Impulse would be a nice set. That might actually be do-able, as Jonathan Horwich, who used to post here, has worked with Mosaic before. Revelation Records 10 minutes ago, B. Mingus did his last bass work for that label, but I seem to remember that the Hampton estate can be "Goodman-like" to deal with. I realize tastes do differ, but overall I find this series certainly not bad but a somewhat lukewarm affair. Many years ago I had a small number of them (that came my way almost by accident) but sold them off again at a time when I did not yet do this with items that were NOT duplicates. These LPs do not seem to be that rare in the secondhand bins either. So apart from the historial angle such as Mingus' last bass work being for that series I am not sure there is a huge market for these recordings given the Mosaic treatment at Mosaic prices. In hindsight somehow I also feel the radio man (who presented these newly-released records in a jazz radio show here) wasn't all wrong when he wondered publicly and with less than maximum appreciation what the producers behind this series (or Lionel Hampton) were possibly thinking with titles such as "Lionel Hampton presents Gerry Mulligan" - as if someone with the status of Gerry Mulligan needed to be presented by someone like Lionel Hampton - certainly a major figure too but no longer as hot in the running as Mulligan conceivably still was at that time. So ... a mixed bag, I'd say. Edited 9 hours ago by Big Beat Steve Quote
mhatta Posted 9 hours ago Report Posted 9 hours ago "The Complete Wayne Shorter Blue Note Studio Sessions" -- many of Wayne Shorter's Blue Note recordings have been reissued multiple times, but some haven't. He recently passed away, and this could sell well and contribute to Mosaic's finances. Besides, they've done similar projects with Joe Henderson and Bobby Hutcherson in recent years. Night Dreamer Juju Speak No Evil The Soothsayer Et Cetera The All Seeing Eye Adam's Apple Schizophrenia Super Nova Moto Grosso Feio Odessey Of Iska Many sessions are short, so perhaps around 10 CDs or such? Also, if possible, I'd like to see the rejected sessions (like the Odessey Of Iska sequel featuring McCoy Tyner for some reason) finally see the light of day. Quote
J.A.W. Posted 6 hours ago Report Posted 6 hours ago (edited) Licensing can be a problem, especially with multi-label sets and different rights holders; some rights holders are not keen to license out material for sets like that - or at all. Edited 6 hours ago by J.A.W. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted 42 minutes ago Report Posted 42 minutes ago good call on the Revelation recordings, of which there are many. Perhaps starting with Gary Foster, Warne Marsh, and Dennis Budimir... It is too bad that Jonathan doesn't post here anymore, and that the Joe Daley expanded reissue did not materialize. Warne Marsh needs an assessment beyond the Atlantic set (Konitz/Tristano/Marsh), though of course we have many labels to choose from and licensing could be an issue. Quote
