    • Strong thumbs up for Mr. Hawkins' gorgeous new one!
    • accidentally saw the announcement of that show yesterday morning (not following things the way I should) and was surprised to see that there were still tickets available, could hardly believe it... guess I should have gone spontaneously nevertheless...
    • Wondering whether anyone may be able to pin down the identit(ies) of the drummer(s) who recorded under James Johnson, Jimmy Johnson, Jimmi Johnsun. I've seen various references to them all being the same man, James Leroy Johnson Jr., born 1930 in Philadelphia. However the wide contextual range of record dates with Duke Ellington, Sun Ra, Walt Dickerson, various 70s pop sessions gives me pause. The heterodox spelling of Jimmhi/Jimmi Johnsun seems to make more sense in a Sun Ra/Walter Dickerson context, less so in some of the earlier dates. As an added wrinkle Osie Johnson's birth name is also James Johnson. While he has record dates with Johnnny Hodges, might he also be the James Johnson to have recorded with Duke Ellington in the late 50s/early 60s?  Are these the names of 1, 2, perhaps even 3 drummers? Would be interested to learn more, from anyone who knows.
    • Last night Pulverize the Sound Peter Evans, Tim Dahl & Mike Reed short intense 35 minute set worth the silly traffic / they hit it intense & keep the energy up the whole time   One time with Mary Halvorson & Tyshawn Sorey he became irrelevant next to those two grand masters. He must think he’s really great to not give Alex space. My god, it’s fucking Alexander von Schlippenbach. Does he not know that Evan Parker lays out?    as an aside my wife hated him:)   she wasn’t a learned listener but she could listen. She didn’t love saxophone, but she loved Tony Malaby, Darius Jones & Kidd Jordan:)      “you got ears, you gotta listen” Don Van Vliet   my Barbara had ears:)
    • Huh. I have that one too. Doesn't have the interview though. (I found a reason to have the Classics as well--rationalization is a collector's necessity). And yes the Classics are getting harder to find, especially affordably, though some I see now and then are cheap--less popular or known artists. . . .
