Mosaic Sets but Especially Tina Brooks
Eric replied to Dan Gould's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I must have read an ad or story in Downbeat, perhaps in 1984 and asked for the Monk set for Christmas that year. A year or two later I remember reading the ad copy for the Tina Brooks set and bought it. I have loved each of those lps since. What a great ride! -

The stickers don't bother me - they are part of the charm (to each his own, I know). This dude had an amazing collection and hit an large number of live shows, especially for the Triangle area. He was one of us and then some. I won Andrew Hill "Grass Roots" - ticket of the show attended (to secure the autograph) on the front, sticker on the rear. The reason I bought this was for Hill's note on the back (above the autograph) which says "I love this L.P." Fortunately the price was a little more modest than the Shorter lps. Nothing against Shorter, but I would much prefer a Hill autograph! While I did not buy it for "investment" purposes, I suspect it will hold its own against other autographed copies of Grass Roots -
Awesome - thanks everyone for responding!

I am with you Larry. This was deemed to be "obvious" by everyone else in the room. I am not positive I saw it either. Guessing there will be another 15-20 opportunities to clarify this Sunday.

This has been an on again/off again thing, but we are leaving tomorrow. The original plan was to see the rock band Spoon on Austin City Limits for NYE, but that cancelled. So looking for ideas on music venues, record stores and to keep Mrs. Eric happy, book stores.

I was struck by the same thing - until it was pointed out she is supposed to be walking on ice. Once again, Dad does not know jack.

Carolina Soul = "the new bastards" (sorta) This was a fun auction to follow. I thought about it on a couple items, but did not want to pay the autograph premium. Hey Dan - how does one search for a seller on Discogs? I have bought a number of things from them on eBay. Also bought a copy of their book for my son, who knows some of the folks involved in the business from his college DJ days. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0316419710/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 -
Not an Excel guru here. I grabbed one of the files from jazzdisco.org and pasted to Excel. Here is an example: BLP 1519 Herbie Nichols Trio 1956 I am able to use text to columns to separate the "BLP" from "1519" and "1519" from "Herbie." Not sure how to separate the "Trio" from "1956." I mean, easy enough for one row, but not sure how to do it for 400-500 rows.

ORNETTE COLEMAN - ROUND TRIP: ORNETTE COLEMAN ON BLUE NOTE

Well I know the Morgan set was strictly not a Tone Poet - but certainly of the same “build” - and digital versions there. Seems odd they would turn away the dollars -
Hey Rooster - St. Louis was mail order only - Jaybee Jazz in Creve Coeur. They would send these flyers on colored paper - I should see whether I still have one around. Used them from mid-80s until they ran out of business. Perhaps they ran out of cut-out Blue Notes to sell. KC - yes, best advice was from Music Exchange. I came in once looking for a Freddie Hubbard record and they turned me on to this Lee Morgan guy. My first lp came from there - The Procrastinator double lp, which I still have and love. Pennylane had a very nice selection as well. Recycled Sounds came a bit later for me. Bought a ton of great early 80s punk/new wave for <$5 each there. But not as much on the jazz side. I liked that place though. You probably don’t recall, but I believe we met each other at the Pennylane after they moved Jazz to the basement. I believe it was through a common acquaintance - the guitarist Monte Muza - who introduced us at the store. Mid-90s most likely. PS - there was also a Pennylane in Lawrence when I went to KU. Very knowledgeable staff. I bought everything from bebop to avant garde - to me it was all good - just jazz to these newbie ears.

Maybe living in a college town close to a “jazz city” (Kansas City) allowed me to miss some of the scarcity. I started buying jazz records circa 1981 or so and the two large local shops had plenty of jazz. Lots of imports (Soul Note, Black Saint, Res) both for new releases and BN reissues (Japanese, French). And all the Milestone 2fers plus tons of OJCs, plus of course Muse. I also found a place in St. Louis (from an ad in the back of Downbeat) that sold cut-out BN titles, tons of them, cheap. There were stores that carried them in KC as well. PS - college town was Lawrence, KS, University of Kansas, whose students over the years included Nathan Davis, Carmell Jones and Bobby Watson. PSS - my search was guided by the Len Lyons book, 101 Best Jazz albums and a very passionate professor of jazz at KU, Dick Wright. Very knowledgeable staff at stores in both Lawrence and KC.
