  1. Sadly, the ranks of Jazz LP and CD shops in London and much of the U.K. have sadly been depleted over the last decade or so, Bol. Even the flagship HMV store closed up shop, thanks to the Internet. First port of call would be Ray's Jazz located in Foyles bookshop on Charing Cross Road. Not a huge place but always worth a look, plus they have a decent selection of jazz literature and a really great coffee shop. Honest Jons in Portobello is always worth a look - particularly if you like Sun Ra, Art Yard etc. In the suburbs there's the likes of Soul Brother located in Streatham, good for soul jazz in particular. Never been a great fan of the vinyl places in Soho but some of them are still in operation around Berwick St I think. Your timing is good for the London Jazz Festival in November - The Cookers and Wayne Shorter are both appearing, there's lots going on by the look of it, worth checking out. Interesting things like Evan Parker at Kings Place, Mike Westbrook solo plus quite a few free events e,g, at Barbican. Best of wishes with your move !
  2. Very impressed with Arun Ghosh, on the scene here in the UK. Great when heard live, superb clarinet technique and really extending the 'Indo-Jazz Fusions' style.
  3. Yep, Voiceprint is the label that my CD is on. That is also correct about the sales tax - the Michael Garrick 'Airborne' LP of Moonscape was a similar one I think. Possibly also that Farnham Festival LP.
  4. My Hawkins set et al arrived OK - The packing box was pretty beat up but fortunately Mosaic had bubble wrapped and padded the internals well.

Same people who are splurging on Mantovani and Frank Chacksfield ! Bought a batch - the BBC Jazz Club transcriptions look intriguing and also bought a bundle of Surmans and Garricks to fill in digital gaps for those ones where I have Deram/Argo LPs. Have also taken a punt on the Annie Ross, Alan Clare and Archie Semple.
  6. ... and totally wasting their/our money as BBC rejigs Mary Berry into another cooking show and hence trashes the 'Bake Off' franchise/empire/sham. Last night - Keith Richards' pirate all-night broadcast on BBC4. Entertaining !
  7. October 2016's 'Record Collector' finally has the Colin Harper article on Deram/Eden/Turtle Records. Also an article on Ember Records and Jeff Kruger which looks quite interesting.
  8. I was pretty amazed when those Hilton Ruiz Novus releases came out with Sam R. featured. Brought home to me just how versatile he was. If I remember right 'Dimensions and Extensions' came out as one of those French Pathe Marconi mid-80s releases, which was the first time I saw the sleeve design (always liked it) and also in my case the first time I ever heard it. At the time, all of the Rivers Blue Notes were pretty well 'missing in action' over here.
  9. The Ayler film is pretty interesting but - unless you understand Swedish (and I don't) - pretty frustrating. If I remember correctly they interviewed Don Ayler not too long before he passed away. Quite a moody and meditative film - no doubt the Lee Morgan will be in the same vein. Looking forward to seeing the Morgan film, assuming it gets shown over here..
  10. 'Cameron at 10 - The Verdict' by Seldon & Snowdon
  11. Sadly, that is the case here too. The PO collect their usual + 'handling charge'. Mine is probably now Mid-Atlantic. Looking forward to it..
  12. They are coming to the UK in November. I'm there !
  13. That POD article is great - looking forward to the rest of it being published. That's the first time I've heard that Sam had backed Billie Holiday in the 'Pres' slot.
  14. Been listening to 'Knucklebean' on vinyl this afternoon, which is also on the aforementioned Mosaic Select. Very enjoyable and with a great picture of a cheerful Bobby H. with the coast behind him on the back sleeve. Of all of the Mosaic Selects, I'm sure I play the Hutcherson and the Grachan the most.
  15. Slightly further East - a bit of rain this morning but lovely conditions for the rest of the day. Just back from a stroll and a pint at Stourhead with owls hooting as a backdrop !
  16. Nice to hear that the Rex Hotel is still going strong. Fun place to hang out..
  17. Maybe the difference is in the way the D to A converters handle the file format? Information wise there should be no difference.
  18. Talk about cutting it fine - just grabbed the Hawkins and added the Boogie Woogie Select and the Getz vinyl (which is on 'flash' sale).

That is a good one. Henry Lowther featured prominently, which is always a plus.
  20. Thanks guys - your wishes appreciated, as always. I did the right thing today by taking an extra day of hol. Been spinning lots of Mosaic's - all of the Blue Mitchell and Freddie Redd CD sets. Vinyl coming up next..
  21. Wade Marcus - He was all over the place back in the 1970s. The first jazz primer book I ever got was full of his stuff too ! His 'Red China Blues' arrangement for Miles was OK..
  22. I like the movie too - for all of its foibles (and it was very much of its time, late 80s/early 1990s). Saw it at an art house cinema at the time it came out and have it on DVD somewhere..
