Recommended Flurin - some of those film clips are pretty obscure and the transfers are very good indeed. I've never seen excerpts from Jazz 625 looking so crisp.

Excellent record - I don't think it's ever made it to CD. I bought it around '73 after hearing Tippett on the King Crimson records and seeing Robert Fripp's name on the credits. Totally confounded me but over time it worked its magic. A CD would be nice - a lot of the record is very quiet, my vinyl copy very noisy! Might be a victim of the 72/73 oil crisis. There was a bit of deterioration in the quality of vinyl used on LPs of that era, which seems to be an issue with UK RCAs in my experience. Possibly. Thinking about it I think I bought it around Easter '74 which was about 8 months after the Yom Kippur War...my first 6 months at university had that whole crisis as a backdrop. I certainly recall vinyl getting thinner and more dodgy. That's when I learnt to hate it!!!! Yep, they made the LPs thinner and started recycling the vinyl. Funnily enough though, the quality of the UK CBS pressings seemed to go up. My Miles twofers of that period still sound superb. Today's finds Art Farmer 'To Duke With Love' (French East Wind). Blows away my old Inner City copy from back in the day. Humphrey Lyttleton 'Blues In The Night' (UK Columbia, mono). Another Lansdowne Series LP, immaculate condition.

Just finished a couple of viewings of the new Tubby Hayes video documentary - 'A Man In A Hurry', put out by Mono Media. About 55 mins so obviously they have TV viewing in mind (BBC4?). It is a pretty good potted history of his life, with some fascinating rare film footage (Tubby with Charlie Chaplin on film, BBC footage with Ella Fitzgerald, rare late footage filmed in Ronnies etc) and some good interviews e.g with Spike Wells, Mike Horovitz and the late Jeff Kruger, who each provide some very telling reminiscences. Simon Spillett is in the anchor role as interviewee, of pulling the whole thing together and predictably he does a fine job. Its just a shame it couldn't have been a bit longer or have a few more extras but, can't complain. Makes a good supplement to the Simon Spillett bio and a fitting tribute on what would have been his 80th year. Recommended !

I have a SABA pressing of that Jaki Byard Vol 1 - very nice. Picked up from a store in Stuttgart at reasonable cost as well (shame that the store is no longer physically 'there'). The Guardian seem to be peddling the same vinyl related rubbish ad nauseum. Their list of shops is crap as well. In general, there are much better places around the country than the ones on this list (albeit the selection would have been way better 10 years ago).

Now why do I never find stuff like that..

Just read that the fine trombonist Nat Peck, of Glenn Miller and Clarke-Boland Big Band fame, had recently died. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/11965812/Nat-Peck-jazz-trombonist-obituary.html Never realised that he lived in the UK, which might explain why he used to crop up on radio and TV interviews. I'd always assumed he was still resident in France. RIP, very fine player.

Poignant to think that the last time I saw Don R. play was at Ian Carr's Memorial Concert. Coleridge Goode was in the front row at that one as well.

Interesting - 'Sound Pieces' was the bit of that set that really stood out as a highlight for me, along with the 'Kennedy Dream' and 'Jazzhattan Suite'. Nice set.

Procrastinated and missed the sale. Ah well, next time round with the Threadgill..

What a great shame - it was just the other day that I was wondering how he was getting on, after the sad news concerning Coleridge Goode. A great legacy to leave though and over 50+ years ! RIP, will be spinning some of his fine recordings this weekend. Starting with Rendell/Carr. Sorry to hear the news concerning Mark Murphy too. RIP.
