Just noticed Dusty Groove has a bunch of the individual Hutcheson CDs (Japanese) for $10.99 each.

Picked up Closer To The Truth on Savant from a few years back. I had modest expectations, which have been well exceeded. Not flashy, very soulful, in the pocket. Tasty guitar from Jacques Lesure as well.

Yeah, I cannot really get into this one either. Meandering is a good way to put it. Plenty of other deeply satisfying Rollins from around this time!

As for Dusty Groove, I have pleasantly discovered that media mail does not take 1-3 weeks as described, but rather is on par with First Class the vast majority of the time. Chicago to Kansas City, maybe that is part of it, straight shot. This has saved me some coin.

Yes 💗 So much good stuff. Inspired by this thread, will listen to the Temple recording on the drive home. Simply bracing, life-affirming music. But I too, love all the eras. A fav from the Atlantic years is Coltrane Plays the Blues. Never tire of that one. Coltrane's Sound too and Coltrane Jazz. Well and First Meditations. And Crescent. And Soultrane. And Sun Ship. And, and, and! What an amazingly deep well. Maybe 30 years ago I thought the Impulse stuff was too out there, although I had never really listened to it. Found a 3 CD Impulse comp around that time and was blown away by the later period material, although there were only a few selections. What an amazing journey.

Close call between Impulse years 1 & 2, but I ultimately chose 2. It has very little to do with the sidemen of that era, rather it is the intensity and urgency of Trane's playing. The ideas and the ability to execute on them, although I have no idea what he is doing in a technical sense. Among my favorite jazz ever recorded.

Back cover of Our Thing by Joe Henderson. Bought it used in the 1980s from one of those jazz list guys. Of course the music is awesome. With the drawings, perhaps my favorite record.

For me, there is a small amount of nostalgia factor going on there. Early 1980s, it was hard to find anything on Blue Mote. So the Dexter album, sure, a yellow tint if I recall correctly. I didn’t really give a crap about sound quality, and that was probably the first place that I heard Freddie Hubbard. A later favorite was Witch Doctor by Art Blakey on cassette that I played to death. Not sure the crappy artwork was even the correct artwork, but I knew it was Art Blakey, and that it kicked butt. I also had Grant Green’s Am I Blue, which saved me from ever buying it again 😂

Up for this 20 year old thread. Hard to believe I first posted here 20 years ago. Anyway, 20 years later, I am still delighting in his Milestone period. More recent favs have been Focal Point and Horizons. But just a deep, deep well. is there any kind of Tyner biography out there?

Love those Milestone two-fers, huge part of my jazz indoctrination, before and after the OJCs. I used to devour the notes as well as the music, which I “burned” on cassettes to listen while driving 😂

Have the Horizon lps *ever* been on CD? Discogs says not. Shame, but will add "Waves ..." to to "to spin" list.
